Natalie Portman Names First Child After First Letter in Hebrew Alphabet

Truth rating: 10

Natalie Portman and her choreographer fiance, Benjamin Millepied, have chosen a name for their newborn son.

They’ve reportedly named their baby boy “Aleph,” which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

The letter “aleph” also corresponds to the number 1, much in the same way one would interchange “A” and “one” when listing off something in English.

The Israeli-born Oscar winner and Millepied met on the set of Black Swan.

You gave this an 8 because you are not 100% certain about the name of the newborn son?

Doesn’t anyone just name their kids ‘John’ or ‘Mike’ or ‘Mary’ anymore?

uh no those names are to obvious and over used and besides it’s honoring her jewish heritage which isn’t uncommon besides there’s always been odd names in hollywood for example Pema Clark though she wasn’t born with that name but Kelly and changed it when she became a buddist nun. Alef can change his name when he turns 18 if he doesn’t like it. nor is naming a child after a favorite celeb or litterary/stage/film Character any different Melissa Newman for example is named after the first charecter her mother Joanne Woodward ever played on film lissy the orphan girl in the movie Count Three & Pray or Ophelia Dahl is probably named after the heroine in Shakesphere’s Hamlet or Liza Todd Burton is named after her mother Elizabeth Taylor at least in first name her middle name is Frances after her maternal grandfather. Natalie won’t have a career like Taylor Woodward Patricia Neal or Lynn Redgrave did

There’s a lot more to the name than just being the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet, things that take it beyond being another “weird Hollywood name”. The thing I found most interesting when I took the time to look into the name was that according to Jewish mysticism, Aleph represents the oneness of God. Natalie was born in Jerusalem and is proud of her Jewish heritage, so naming her son Aleph seems okay to me.
