State medical examiners in Massachusetts have ruled the death of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan’s father a homicide.
But, according to a statement released by the family’s attorney, Tracy Miner, ”The Kerrigan family is extremely disappointed that the medical examiner would release a cause of death without having all of the relevant facts. We believe this finding to be premature and inaccurate.”
“The Kerrigan family does not blame anyone for the unfortunate death of Dan Kerrigan, who had a pre-existing heart condition,” added the statement.
Daniel Kerrigan died on January 24 following an argument over the use of a telephone with his son, Mark Kerrigan. The skater’s brother and father pushed each other until the younger Kerrigan “put his hands around his father’s neck and his father fell to the floor,” according to a police report.
Mark thought his father was “faking it,” but Daniel in fact had suffered a massive heart attack.
Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said the cause of death was “cardiac dysrhythmia.”
Mark Kerrigan, who appeared to be intoxicated when police arrived, pleaded not guilty to assault and battery on a person over 60 after the elder Kerrigan’s death.
There is still no decision on whether Mark Kerrigan will face more severe charges.
