Mumford & Sons Slam Jay Z and “F*cking Plutocrats” Behind Tidal Streaming Music

Mumford & Sons has no use for Tidal, the glitzy new streaming music service recently introduced by Jay Z and supported by some of his famous music star friends. In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Marcus Mumford and his bandmates take aim at the new platform.

The streaming service debuted to plenty of hype a couple of weeks ago, aided by a star-studded launch event featuring the ultra-successful artists who have signed on, including Madonna, Rihanna, Kanye West and Beyonce.

“We wouldn’t have joined it anyway, even if they had asked. We don’t want to be tribal,” Mumford tells the outlet. “I think smaller bands should get paid more for it, too. Bigger bands have other ways of making money, so I don’t think you can complain. A band of our size shouldn’t be complaining. And when they say it’s artist-owned, it’s owned by those rich, wealthy artists.”

Guitarist Winston Marshall is blunt, calling the stars who launched Tidal “new school f*cking plutocrats.” The recent debate over how to monetize music online has also involved Taylor Swift, who pulled her content from Spotify and has spoken out against platforms undervaluing the artists’ work. Marshall says he disagrees with Swift’s point of view, too, because it doesn’t account for how the music industry is changing.

Mumford says of Tidal, “What I’m not into is the tribalistic aspect of it — people trying to corner bits of the market, and put their face on it. That’s just commercial bullsh*t. We hire people to do that for us rather than having to do that ourselves. We just want to play music, and I don’t want to align myself with Spotify, Beats, Tidal, or whatever. We want people to listen to our music in their most comfortable way, and if they’re not up for paying for it, I don’t really care.” What do you think about what he has to say?
