Muhammad Ali ESPYs Video: Watch ESPY Awards Tribute With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chance The Rapper
Muhammad Ali received a posthumous tribute at Wednesday’s 2016 ESPYs. Watch below.
As Gossip Cop has reported, Ali died last month at age 74 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Since then, he’s been touchingly remembered at the Spike Guys’ Choice Awards and the BET Awards. And now at the ESPY Awards, longtime friend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led a touching tribute towards the end of the ceremony.
The former NBA star recalled meeting the heavyweight champion for the first time as daughter Laila Ali sat in the audience. Abdul-Jabbar went on to say, “We’re never going to see his likes again… But I hope his death spurs his successors to remember what truly made him the greatest.”
It was only revealed late Tuesday that Chance The Rapper would also be part of the tribute. He tweeted, “I am honored to say I will be apart of a special tribute to the great Muhammad Ali at tomorrow nights #ESPYS.” Now, as a montage of memorable moments from Ali’s life played on a screen behind him, the music star performed a moving song that the sports legend seemingly inspired.
Other late sports stars featured in this year’s ESPYs In Memoriam earlier in the ceremony were Yogi Berra, Pat Summitt, and Gordie Howe. Check out video of the Ali tribute below.
