The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was the most pirated movie of 2013, according to TorrentFreak.

The site has released its list of the films downloaded most often on file-sharing service BitTorrent over the past year, and the first movie in The Hobbit franchise (released in December 2012) finished #1 with approximately 8.4 million illegal downloads.

In second place was Django Unchained (8.1 million), followed by Fast and Furious 6 with an estimated 7.9 million downloads.

The numbers are based on data including download statistics by public BitTorrent trackers on files downloaded between January 1 and mid-December, hence the small skew toward movies that were released earlier in the year (instead of, say, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire).

While the chart is therefore imperfect, it is an interesting snapshot of what people were most desperate to torrent over the past year.
