“Mockingjay – Part 2” Wins Lackluster Box Office Weekend
Mockingjay – Part 2 won the weekend box office once again. With holiday activities keeping families busy and the Star Wars: The Force Awakens not set to open until next week, moviegoers seemed to have stayed away from theaters this weekend. The quietness allowed Mockingjay – Part 2 to hang on to the top spot with just $11.3 million. This marks the fourth week the last installment in The Hunger Games franchise landed at number one.
Ron Howard’s new epic, In The Heart Of The Sea starring Chris Hemsworth, added to this weekend’s box office woes. The movie opened to just $11 million for second place. The Good Dinosaur, Pixar’s latest offering, came in third with $10.5 million. Creed and the Christmas-themed horror comedy Krampus took fourth and fifth places with $10.1 million and $8 million, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 10 during this lackluster weekend at the box office was Spectre in sixth place with $4 million, followed by The Night Before in the seventh position and ticket sales of $3.9 million. Nabbing eighth place was The Peanuts Movie, which earned $2.6 million, while Spotlight secured ninth with $2.5 million. And just making it into the Top 10 was Brooklyn with $1.9 million
