“Moana” Wins Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office
Disney ruled the Thanksgiving weekend box office with its newest animated family film, Moana. Get the details, and check out the Top 10 movies below!
As Gossip Cop has reported, Moana features the voice of Dwayne Johnson and music from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film tells the story of a Polynesian teen (voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho), who goes on an epic quest to break a curse killing her family’s island. Like most Disney musicals, the movie received positive reviews and attracted both kids and adults.
And, thanks in part to the higher cost of 3D tickets, Moana had an opening weekend gross of $55.5 million. Last week’s chart-topper, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, hung on strong for a second-place finish with $45.1 million. It was then a big drop to third, where Dr. Strange landed with $13.4 million. Allied, starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, took in $13 million to debut in the number four spot. Following in fifth was Arrival with $11.25 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Trolls in sixth with $10.3 million in receipts, while Almost Christmas secured seventh with $7.6 million. Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa 2 nabbed eighth place with $6.1 million, and Hacksaw Ridge came in ninth with $5.45 million. Just making it into the last slot at number 10 was The Edge Of Seventeen. It earned $2.96 million.
