Missy Elliott: I Am NOT Releasing A New Single!
Missy Elliott is shooting down reports claiming she has a new single on the way.
Outlets ranging from Entertianment Weekly to Rap-Up said on Friday that new music would be released soon, possibly as early as next month. EW, for instance, tweeted, “@Timbaland says @MissyElliott has a new single, produced by @Pharrell, coming up,” while Rap-Up wrote, “Missy Elliott Teams with Pharrell for New Single.” But it’s not true, and the confusion unfortunately seems to stem from comments Timbaland made on Thursday.
At the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards, Timbaland was actually praising and defending Elliott when he seemed to drop some big news. “I’m going to say it now,” he announced. “Her first single is from my cousin — yes, we are family — Pharrell.”
The seemingly big reveal was met with cheers from the audience, and caught on video, leading it to spread online. But while Pharrell and Elliott did indeed spend some time working together in the studio earlier this year (see photo above), she says there’s no song coming out any time soon… if at all.
“Sorry no dates on a new single from me,” Elliott tweeted on Friday evening. “I’ll keep yall posted if or when I do.” The rapper’s last studio album came out nearly 10 years ago, and performances with Pharrell (at last year’s BET Awards) and Katy Perry (at the Super Bowl earlier this year) have only left fans clamoring for more. Should there be actual, legitimate music news to report at some point, Gossip Cop will have it.
