VIDEO: Miley Cyrus Has Homeless Man Jesse Accept Award, Make VMAs Speech
Miley Cyrus just stole the show at the MTV Video Music Awards by letting a young homeless man accept her honor for Video of the Year in an incredible, emotional moment.
After “Wrecking Ball” was announced the winner, Cyrus hugged Jesse, who then walked up to the stage and accepted the award from Jimmy Fallon on Cyrus’ behalf. He gave a speech talking about his own situation and the overall youth homeless crisis in Los Angeles and beyond as Cyrus looked on from the audience, crying.
It was an unexpected, wonderful moment. Shortly after her friend’s speech, Cyrus posted a video about a homeless center called My Friend’s Place on her Facebook page (see below).
Interestingly, this was Cyrus’ first ever VMAs win. While she’s been nominated a total of eight times, dating back to 2008, she’s never actually won before. That means that, while many stars would no doubt want the spotlight for themselves under such circumstances, Cyrus ceded an extra special moment of glory to a much bigger cause.
It was a somber, but inspiring note in the often upbeat awards show. It wasn’t entirely out of place, however. The night also featured a moment of silence in remembrance of Michael Brown, the unarmed teen who was killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri.
