Miley Cyrus Drops $500,000 At AmfAR Gala
Miley Cyrus spent $500,000 at Wednesday’s star-studded AmfAR Gala in Los Angeles, bidding $300,000 on a print of a naked woman by famed photographer Ryan McGinley and donating another $200,000 to the AIDS research organization.
“I’m a little drunk. That’s why I’m a half million deep,” said Cyrus when she later took the stage. “If I’m going to have a voice I would like to start an open dialogue about prevention and awareness and how people in the world have been affected by HIV and AIDS. Hopefully, I could break down people’s walls that have been built up around sexuality.”
She added, “I’m obviously not too embarrassed to talk about these things, especially with young people.”
In another memorable moment, Gwyneth Paltrow introduced her estranged husband Chris Martin, who gave a surprise performance with his Coldplay colleague Jonny Buckland. Paltrow called Martin the “father of the year.”
Martin was in good spirits, joking as he took the stage that he and Buckland were “Justin Timberlake” and “Justin Bieber.” “We are ‘Bieber and Timberlake,’ and we play Coldplay covers just for money,” Martin told the crowd. “So you are very privileged to be here to watch us do this, because normally we play Bieber and Timberlake songs.”
The night’s honoree, designer Tom Ford, donated $200,000 to the AmfAR cause, as did Rihanna. Other guests included Rita Wilson, Lea Michele, Sharon Stone, Matthew Morrison, Ashlee Simpson, Molly Sims and January Jones.
