Michael Sam OWN Reality Show Postponed
The Michael Sam documentary series has been postponed.
As Gossip Cop reported, OWN announced on Wednesday that the first-ever openly-gay football player drafted into the NFL agreed to let Oprah’s cameras follow him as he tries to make the St. Louis Rams.
There was some immediate backlash, with some wondering whether the reality show would be a distraction, and if the NFL or the Rams had approved the project.
At it turns out, they hadn’t, and now the docuseries has been indefinitely delayed.
In a statement released Friday night, OWN president Erik Logan says, “After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams. ‘The Untitled Michael Sam Project’ has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dreams of making the team.”
“OWN is about elevating and empowering people to achieve their best. It’s clear that we, along with the world, recognize the opportunity that Michael has in this moment,” continues Logan, adding, “We will continue to support him in his journey to earn a spot playing for the Rams.”
Sam himself has not commented, but his agent Cameron Weiss released a statement saying, “After today’s meeting with the Rams, we felt it is best to postpone the project. This will allow for Michael to have total focus on football, and will ensure no distractions to his teammates.”
“Everybody involved remains committed to project and understands its historical importance as well as its positive message,” adds Weiss.
