Did Michael Phelps Make Olympic History?

Michael Phelps got off to a slow start at the London Olympics — but on Tuesday he had the chance to make history.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The swimmer was attempting to tie and pass Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina, whose 18 medals were the most won by any Olympic athlete.

And… Phelps did it!

First, the 27-year-old American grabbed the silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly to equal Latynina’s mark.

Phelps then broke the record an hour later with a gold medal-winning anchor leg for Team USA in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, celebrating the victory with teammates Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Ricky Berens.

For his career, the swim legend now has a staggering 15 golds, two silvers and two bronzes.

Phelps has three more races in London to add to his record before retiring from Olympic competition.
