Michael Phelps Suspended By USA Swimming For 6 Months After DUI Arrest
Michael Phelps has been suspended for six months from USA Swimming-related competition, it was announced on Monday.
The Olympic icon is being punished for his DUI arrest last week in Baltimore.
As a result of his suspension, Phelps will be ineligible to participate in USA Swimming events through April 6, 2015.
He has been withdrawn from the 2015 World Championship Team and will not represent the United States at the 2015 FINA World Swimming Championships in Russia.
“Michael’s conduct was serious and required significant consequences,” USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said in a statement. “Michael has publicly acknowledged the impact of his decisions, his accountability especially due to his stature in the sport and the steps necessary for self-improvement.”
Wielgus added, “We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions.”
His suspension should not affect his potential participation in the 2016 Olympics.
