Michael Phelps Supports Ryan Lochte: ‘I’ve Reached Out To Him’ – ‘Today’ Show Video
Lochte has been under fire since it emerged he largely lied about being robbed at gunpoint while in Rio for the Olympics. Though he issued an apology statement and secured a new endorsement deal after several sponsors dropped him, the controversial athlete is still going through a difficult time. But he at least has one of the greatest Olympians of all time in his corner.
“Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie said she didn’t want to put Phelps “on the spot,” but nonetheless asked him for his take on the scandal. “Ryan and I have been teammates forever. It’s always hard to see a friend and a competitor go through a hard time like this,” he responded.
Phelps continued, “I know what it feels like, and I’ve been through it before. Hopefully he can, you know, come out of this a better person. I’ve reached out to him a couple times, and he, I think, understands a lot, and he will be able to grow from this.”
The swimmer was actually on the show to celebrate yet another one of his own milestones: Being on the cover of the first-ever Wheaties ‘Lifetime Achievement’ cereal box. “You think of the greatest athletes in the world have been able to be on a box of Wheaties, and to be able to have the first “Lifetime Achievement” box — the career just keeps getting better and better,” Phelps said.
Of course, the athlete is now entering the retirement phase of his career, and he admitted, “It’s nice not having to wake up at the crack of dawn and jump in a freezing cold pool. I can sleep until [son] Boomer says it’s time to get up.” Check out the full interview below!
