Gossip Cop recently reported that Michael Phelps and Brittny Gastineau were spotted on an extended date this past weekend.

The two were seen Friday night hanging out at the Mondrian hotel in L.A., and then shopping the following day at The Grove, an outdoor shopping, food and entertainment complex.

We’re told Phelps and Gastineau met about a week earlier at Tao in Las Vegas, where Gastineau was celebrating her birthday.

So, what’s the status of these two?

An insider tells us Gastineau “really liked him,” but the “media hoopla” that surrounded them hanging out last weekend “scared him a bit.”

Hard to believe anything could scare a 14-time Olympic gold medalist.
