‘SNL’ Stars Michael Che, Colin Jost: Donald Trump Is “Super Smart”
“Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update co-anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost insist in a new interview that Donald Trump is “super smart,” despite the Republican presidential nominee’s critics believing otherwise. The “SNL” stars also contend Trump isn’t the monster he’s been made out to be.
In an interview this week on Politico’s “Off Message” podcast, Che explained his stance on the mogul-turned-politician. “Should he be president? No,” the Weekend Update anchor said. “Let’s not pretend that this guy is a mutant and he’s the most evil, racist, mutant piece of crap that ever walked. Listen, there’s probably somebody in your building way worse than Donald Trump, and you buy bagels from him, and it’s fine.”
Jost jumped in to add that both Trump and his opponent Hillary Clinton are both “super smart people and super hardworking people,” to which Che added, “And you can’t deny that. That’s what bothers me, when people make it seem like, ‘You know what? I’m smarter than Donald Trump.’ Like no, you’re not, all right?” Jost went on to attribute Trump’s success to him addressing “huge problems that no one on either side was talking about,” including the loss of jobs among “white middle-class America.” Jost also noted that the GOP nominee’s supporters include “lower-class workers that felt like they lost jobs in their town or their kids are going to lose jobs to immigrants.” Che and Jost will presumably have plenty more to say about Trump when Season 42 of “SNL” premieres this Saturday.
