Michael Bay Tells Outraged Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fans to “Chill” and “Relax”

Truth rating: 10

Michael Bay has responded to outraged Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans after his implication that an upcoming live-action reboot would turn the half-shell heroes into aliens triggered controversy.

It all began when, speaking about the project at a recent Nickelodeon Upfront event, the director-producer casually said, “These turtles are from an alien race, and they’re going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable.”

The Internet promptly melted down, with fans upset about the possibility of the turtles going from earthly “mutants” to extraterrestrial beings.

Robbie Rist, a voice actor in the original movies, was particularly distressed, writing an open letter in which he accused Bay of “sodomizing” those films and cited “the rape of our childhood memories.”

Wow.

Now Bay is responding to the controversy and asking for calm.

“Fans need to take a break, and chill,” writes Bay in a statement. “They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story.”

He continues, “Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.”

Hopefully, the Great Ninja Turtles Crisis of 2012 will cool down for a bit.

This has to be one of the funniest things I have read in awhile. Cartoon characters, which were invented in the first place are not REAL and are not, as far as I can tell, “insulted” by what is being done to them. Is it really that serious or did I miss a part of this story?

Ha ha I watched and loved the TMNT as a kid. I even had my brother draw them on campaign posters (construction paper) when I was running for student body president in elementary school. Alas I lost. But “campaigning” was fun and so was the yearly ball. I never got an invite to it because it was very exclusive. Only “elected” officials and the school librarians favorites. She was the one who threw it. I was president of the 4th grade class so I got an invite. I’m lol’ing remebering this. If they can develop a backstory that would still incorporate (and have it make sense) essential elements of the original then bring it on!

1st – Michael Bay saying that “people haven’t read the script yet” is funny to me. What script? That half-wit doesn’t know anything about using a script. Look at the piece of crap Transformers trilogy, or any other movie he’s made. How would fans reading the script make us like the movie better? There is no script, just one moronic explosion after another.

2nd – What’s the point of making a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie when it’s not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Its like if I created a movie about a guy who uses a flashlight to kill Trolls and call it the Green Lantern and claim that its based on the DC Comics character. It’s not the character. It’s not what people expect from the movie. It’s false advertising.

Michael Bay is just creating a movie about aliens fighting on Earth and using the TMNT name to promote it. That’s moronic. Can’t Hollywood promote a movie without claiming its something that already exists when its not based on what already exists?

Stop giving us shit and calling it art, Hollywood.

Hey, TMNT started as a big format, black and white comic book that was way edgier than the ludicrous children’s movies. Bay said that one of the original creators is on-board to work on the script so whatever changes they make are fine with me.

You need to rethink things if you think you’re a purist and you refer to the “movies” as your source of angst for any departures of this new version.

That’s a moronic statement nwrann. No one is complaining because the format of the turtles is changing. We’re complaining because the basic concept and idea of what makes them Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is changing. Going from black and white to color, and dark and edgy to comical, doesn’t change who and what the Turtles are.

Are they still considered Teenagers? They’re definitely not Mutants anymore? Are they even going to be Ninjas or just fighters? And what makes them Turtle’s if they’re aliens?

Way to go Michael….piss everyone off and then instead of being diplomatic be condescending.

Michael Bay+TMNT=Illuminati Alien subliminal messages that will help bring on the New World Order. Boycott it for the sake of humanity. #F*ckMichaelBay

so he’ll need to change it to Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles… their “back story” is in the title

  • nwrann

What makes you think that our terrestrial turtles WEREN’T aliens to begin with?

    In Bay I Trust.

  • R E

Bay needs to add “Intergalactic” to their name – “Teenage Alien Intergalactic Ninja Turtles” so the initials will be “TAINT.”

Normally I would think this is a ridiculous topic, but I this once I have to agree with the angry masses. Comic book canon is what it is. You can tell a million stories, they’re comic book characters, but don’t screw with the canon. What’s next is he planning on making Wonder Woman from Venus, or wait how about making all of the X-Men aliens instead of mutants?
I will fully admit I’m a dork, if Michael Bay just admits that while he makes big budget movies they are very rarely good, and he stays at the party way too long.

He’s pretty much just fucking with everybody and ruining everybody’s shit. Because he can. And because it’s funny. And because it’ll make money. Seriously… “alien turtles”… I don’t even know which word of that phrase to emphasize, it’s that ridiculous. It’s actually kind of amusing listening to the shit he says. How can you read that (or hear it) and not laugh? This guy is just fucking around with everyone. I’m not even really a fan of TMNT to begin with. A bunch of anthropomorphic teenage turtles who live in a sewer with a giant rat as their mentor and eat pizza and fight a guy named Shredder with an army of stereotypical(ly bad) ninjas? Kinda fucked up. Seriously, it’s pretty stupid. But somehow, Michael Bay manages to top that with “alien turtles”. WE know it’s stupid. HE knows it’s stupid. But a bunch of idiots who bitch about Bay being the devil (which he might be) and how TMNT is ruined will go to see the film on opening day, anyway. And then bitch afterwards how it was exactly what they knew it was going to be. Sure, Michael Bay sucks. But everyone else sucks even harder. How can you even blame Bay at this point? STOP WATCHING HIS SHIT. The guy is pure evil. Look at that smug jackassed grin. Imagine a full-on unrestrained bout of maniacal laughter coming from that face. He’s pure evil.

Because they were created as Earth bound Turtles. Now the Ooze may be alien in nature. And if that’s what Bay is doing, then that’s cool. We don’t necessarily know where the ooze came from.

  • Batmanishere2093

You’re a dumbass. If he wants Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles then he should go make his own thing not essentially rip off what was once a good idea.

  • Batmanishere2093

you’re a hero of the people Troy

  • Batmanishere2039

It matters which one though, trust me, it does.

    Got to love Nickelodeon/Viacom.

  • Turtlegirl

aliens-> why? because they’re not mutant, and since they’re alien they’re not turtles, and since they weren’t created on earth they wouldn’t be called ninja’s 1. because they wouldn’t practice ninjitsu because that is an earth based form of martial arts and 2. because it sounds stupid, also how would we know if they’re even teenagers based on Earth time. So they are not teenage mutant ninja turtles, they are aliens. Congrats bay you have grasped the fans’ attention negatively if you want to fix it make them teenage mutant ninja turtles and bring back Raph’s girlfriend Mona Lisa and maybe some other mutant girls or just other mutants… not from other dimensions like the last tmnt though, real cool and awesome mutants
