Meryl Streep Slams Unauthorized Biography ‘Her Again’ – STATEMENT
Meryl Streep is slamming an unauthorized biography that claims Dustin Hoffman slapped her while filming Kramer vs. Kramer. A rep for the actress tells Gossip Cop Streep “made no contribution” to the book “nor has she read it.”
In Michael Schulman’s upcoming biography, Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep, the author details some allegedly intense conditions during the filming of the 1978 drama. According to the book, Hoffman got physical with actress during one particularly dramatic scene, allegedly leaving Streep with a mark across her face.
“On the second day, they continued shooting the opening scene, when Ted [Hoffman] follows the hysterical Joanna [Steep] into the hallway. They shot the bulk of it in the morning and, after lunch, set up for some reaction shots,” Schulman writes in the book. “Dustin and Meryl took their positions on the other side of the apartment door. Then something happened that shocked not just Meryl but everyone on set. Right before their entrance, Dustin slapped her hard across the cheek, leaving a red mark.”
In addition to the alleged face smack, the book claims Hoffman brought up the recent death of Streep’s then-boyfriend, John Cazale, in order to create the drama he felt was needed for the scene in Kramer vs. Kramer. “He was goading her and provoking her,” the film’s producer, Richard Fischoff is quoted as saying in the book. He added, “[Hoffman was] using stuff that he knew about her personal life and about John to get the response that he thought she should be giving in the performance.”
In the book, Schulman further writes that director Robert Benton feared the riff between his stars would derail the film, but the Academy and audiences thought otherwise. Both Streep and Hoffman earned Oscars for their performances. Kramer vs. Kramer also went on to win Best Picture and Best Director.
In a statement to Gossip Cop on Tuesday about the biography, the actress’s rep said, “Ms. Streep has no comment on this book. It was unauthorized. She made no contribution to it, nor has she read it.” Streep and Hoffman have never starred opposite one another in the nearly 40 years since Kramer vs. Kramer.
