Melissa Rivers Sues Clinic: You Caused My Mom Joan’s Death
Melissa Rivers has filed a lawsuit against Yorkville Endoscopy, the clinic where her mother Joan went into cardiac arrest and sustained brain damage during a routine procedure last year, ultimately leading to her death. The suit alleges gross medical malpractice on the part of the clinic’s doctors, whom Melissa blames for a series of mistakes and delays that cost Joan her life. The older Rivers died in September at the age of 81.
Among the problems with the clinic’s response to Rivers’ medical emergency, according to the lawsuit, was a failure to perform a tracheotomy, a 12-minute delay in calling 911, the presence of an unauthorized doctor in the room, and the failure to monitor Rivers’ vital signs. The suit also claims that one doctor took cell phone pictures of Rivers while she was under sedation, and paints a picture of the medical staff as being negligent and distracted by Rivers’ fame. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
In a statement, Melissa Rivers explained, “Filing this lawsuit was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make. What ultimately guided me was my unwavering belief that no family should ever have to go through what my mother, Cooper and I have been through. The level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behavior is shocking and frankly, almost incomprehensible. Not only did my mother deserve better, every patient deserves better. It is my goal to make sure that this kind of horrific medical treatment never happens to anyone again.”
