Mel Gibson Lying About Being Sober?
Is Mel Gibson lying about being sober? That’s the bold claim coming from a supermarket tabloid. Gossip Cop looked into the allegation.
In the current edition of the National Enquirer is a headline blaring, “Mad Mel Declares: ‘I’ve Been Sober For 10 Years!’ (Yeah Right.)” Further exclaiming, “Liar, liar pants on fire” like a child would, it’s said, “Hell-raiser Mel Gibson claimed recently he’s been stone cold sober for 10 years, but the National Enquirer knows better!”
“In an Oct. 16. interview with Australian TV show ‘Sunday Night,’ Mel protested he’s been on the wagon since his profanity-laced 2006 DUI arrest,” writes the magazine, which quotes Gibson as saying, “I am a member of a 12-step program and I achieved sobriety like that. I’ve got 10 years of sobriety under my belt.” But the outlet goes on to accuse the star of lying.
It’s alleged that earlier this year, “Mad Mel was ‘woozy’ as he stumbled around a supermarket with a fork in his mouth — and one eyewitness said the actor ‘tripped a couple of times.” The publication also points to supposed drunken incidents in 2009 and 2010. And so, it’s said Gibson was “whin[ing]” when he said in the interview, “It’s disheartening when you have been like 10 years dry on the wagon, sober and you have to read every year that you’re loaded.”
That’s actually an understandable complaint, and the National Enquirer just proved his point. But what about the conflicting timelines not aligning? Gossip Cop spoke with a rep for Gibson, who denied the tabloid’s claim that the actor is lying about being sober. “They are idiots,” says the spokesperson. Well then.
