Prince’s Ex-Wife Mayte Garcia Talks Memoir On ‘Good Morning America’ (VIDEO)
Prince’s ex-wife, Mayte Garcia, appeared on Tuesday’s “Good Morning America” to discuss her new memoir, “The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince.” Watch the full interview in the video below.
Garcia, who was married to Prince for four years before they divorced in 2000, opens up about her life with the late singer in her book. “This is kind of for me an honor to him and what we had,” Garcia said on Tuesday’s “GMA.” “It’s a beautiful story and… such a tragic loss and it happened so sudden that I wanted also before a lot of other people had their story, I wanted to share something as intimate and loving.”
Prince died last April from an accidental fentanyl overdose at his home in Paisley Park, but Garcia said on the morning talk show that she wasn’t aware of her ex-husband’s drug use. “He was a machine,” she noted. “Music kept him going. That was his drug. That’s what I knew.”
Garcia’s memoir also includes new details about the loss of her and Prince’s infant son, Amiir, who died one week after being born prematurely. “It was really hard, but it was also very liberating and healing and also honoring of him because for so many years I held it in,” Garcia said. “When we lost Amiir, I read a lot of books that helped me and I’m hoping that somebody will read this and that it will help them as well.”
As for why she and Prince hid their son’s death from the public for a long time, Garcia explained on the morning talk show, “It was just escalated because it was Prince’s son, but it was how he handled it and I respected that.” Watch the full “GMA” interview below.
