Reaction: Matthew McConaughey Says Hollywood Needs To “Embrace” Donald Trump
In an appearance on the BBC’s “The Andrew Marr Show,” McConaughey was asked if it’s time “Hollywood and the cultural elite of America gave this guy a break.” The actor responded, “They don’t have a choice now. He’s our president. It’s very dynamic, and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we’ve ever had. At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace, shake hands with this fact, and be constructive with him over the next four years.”
McConaughey went on, “Even those who most strongly may disagree with his principles or things he’s said and done, which is another thing, we’ll see what he does compared to what he had said. No matter how much you disagreed along the way, it’s time to think how constructive can you be because he’s our president for the next four years, at least.”
Though the video clip was released days ago, “Matthew McConaughey” became a trending topic on Thursday as his comments went viral. And there’s quite the mixed reaction on Twitter. Naturally, some are questioning his remarks.
@PinkSparkle710 said in response to some of the praise the star was getting, “So, let me get this straight… Matthew McConaughey can talk about his political views, but Meryl Streep can’t?” Blogger @LeonCarrington wrote, “Matthew McConaughey says that we all need to ’embrace #Trump.’ Must be nice to be white & rich and tell everyone else to calm down!” @bennycromwell1 similarly tweeted, “Matthew McConaughey said America needs to embrace @POTUS. Easy for You to say considering your also a white guy with money #Sit #Down
“Dunno if Matthew McConaughey thinks we should embrace Putin and Russia’s FSB also. A ‘journalist’ should ask,” posted @TheFreshBrew. @ChefLindaBoston tweeted, “Add Matthew McConaughey to the list of actors whose movies I will never watch again. Here’s a tip, Matt: #DontSupportNazis.” @Ange_Faye_S even said, “Wish I watched Matthew McConaughey so I could stop watching him in protest. -sigh-.”
And @Hegedus216CLE cracked, “Matthew McConaughey in 2016: ‘Alright, alright, alright…’ Matthew McConaughey in 2017: ‘Alt-right, alt-right, alt-right…’ Others offered up genuine support for the actor’s take, and criticized the backlash. @anne19brown, for instance, commented, “Oh dear, looks like Matthew McConaughey is the next celebrity to be boycotted. All because of what he said. #MAGA #NeverHillary EVER.”
@bab_tinkerbell exclaimed, “ABOUT TIME TEXAS BOYS SPEAKING OUT!” @stonna78 expressed, “Thank you, Matthew McConaughey! He’s not saying he voted for &/or supports everything POTUS says or does, he’s saying time to accept. Amen!” @gbahama wrote, “Wait, did this comment actually come from a Hollywood elite actor? Props to MM and let’s get over it! Love America.”
“Thank you, Matthew McConaughey, for showing the rest of Hollywood how to properly use their brains!” tweeted @PF_Olson. And @Zaer81 remarked, “Matthew McConaughey disagrees with MSM and Hollywood on fighting Trump, not the same as agreeing w/ him, and he’s instantly bullied by libs.” McConaughey has not responded to any of the reaction.
