Matt Damon Clarifies Gay Comments On “Ellen DeGeneres Show” (VIDEO)
As Gossip Cop reported, The Guardian published an interview with Damon on Sunday in which he called speculation about himself and Ben Affleck “deeply offensive.” He also seemed to suggest that coming out would be harmful to gay actors’ careers, and suggested people refrain from discussing their sexuality. But in his interview with DeGeneres, which taped on Monday, Damon clarified his statements.
DeGeneres, who is openly gay, brought the subject up first, asking Damon to “address” his remarks, and he admitted he had only just learned of the controversy the interview had sparked. The Oscar winner then said he was talking about how “actors are more effective when you know less about their personal lives,” but in the context of his own experiences with Affleck and the gay rumors that emerged in the wake of their success with Good Will Hunting.
“I was just trying to say that actors are more effective when they’re a mystery,” explained Damon. “And somebody picked it up and said I said gay actors should get back in the closet. It’s stupid, but it’s painful when things get said that you don’t believe, and then it gets represented as that’s what you believe.”
DeGeneres admitted she first heard about the quotes earlier in the day, but personally knowing Damon, she said, “You’re not that guy.” Ever the comedienne, she then joked, “And it shocks me that you and Ben are not gay.” On Monday night, DeGeneres tweeted the interview clip, writing, “I know Matt Damon is a good guy. I was happy to help set the record straight (or gay. Up to you).”
