WATCH: Nicki Minaj Accuses Short Idol Contestant of Seeking “Pity Party”

Nicki Minaj didn’t mince words when it came to criticizing Matheus Fernandes on Thursday’s “American Idol.”

The diminutive contestant, who initially blew away the judges with his big pipes and small size, turned Minaj off during his final solo audition during Hollywood Week.

The former “Glee Project” contestant first joked about his short stature and looked like he’s 10 years old, but then went on to say people used to “laugh” at him.

“Sometimes things can go from being inspiring to becoming you wanting a pity party,” Minaj told him, warning him not to “milk that ever again.”

“Be you. Be great,” she encouraged. “And just rest on your talent after today.”

But Fernandes’ “Idol” journey ended there, as he was eliminated from the competition just a short time later.

The 22-year-old, who partially blamed his mediocre performance on the fact that it was his first time with a live band, was left devastated and in tears by the judges’ decision.

You should hear the screaming over on the American Idol Facebook page. People cannot stand Nikki M! She’s NOT Simon, no matter how hard she tries to be. She’s a disgusting person who is trying to change American Idol into a freak show.

  • Me

Why? She’s only telling the guy to rise(pardon the pun) beyond his height and not use it as a crutch and to get by on being himself on his talent. What’s wrong with that? She wasn’t saying it in a nasty way.

  • dougx

Maybe but I agree with her in this situation. Tired of these contestants claiming they “have been through so much” to get here, etc.

  • Kevin

I am amazed that this guy has not been called out for his lying! He said he’d never sung with a live band which is such a lie because he sang with one on The Glee Project. He said he has only sung in the car. And he never mentioned his role on Glee Project. BULLCRAP! He seems like a fraud!

  • Nick

This is WHY I think Nicki is too good for this sham of a show…she doesn’t play along with the BS. She aint Simon, you’re right, she’s Nicki, but Nicki gives bitches the business and calls a spade a spade

  • Halle79

I don’t care either way for her but I really don’t see what she did wrong.

He is not a fraud! Who are you to know what Matheus is like. He is very genuine and not in anyway fake. It was so sad to see him go. I do think that his performance was as good as the other performances he has done. Maybe the pressure got to him. :(

  • THATGUY

    amen

  • Dave

I agree. He’s a total fake. I DID sing with a band on Glee Project

  • THATGUY

Anybody notice that no one else gives advice to the contestants? It’s Nicki and Randy. Everybody else, including the highest paid most successful and experienced judge, is simply telling good singers that they’re good singers. They know they’re good, your job is to weed out the unworthy and help them too not just sick and look pitiful when they’ve messed up

  • so_disrespectful

She did nothing wrong it,s her haters running are twisting it in to something it,s not,she gave the dude really good constructive criticism, the dude always singing some song about is height are something in that area, you can’t be trying to use your faults as a crutch, that,s not fare to the other contestants, for him to always get a break for is faults no it,s not, this is a competition,Nicki Minaj isn’t trying to be no Simon she just told the dude the honest truth to help him in no way what she said was disrespectful,

  • Dawson8203

I’m with Kevin – Matheus sang on Glee and DID sing with a live band so he did LIE. Except THERE he was trying SO HARD to be cool and sexy, taking his shirt off all the time and talking about how confident he is. Now he’s playing this “No one has ever given me a chance – I’m really not ten years old” crap. I’m with Nikki 100% — he has been using this act as a total crutch and I think Nikki was actually VERY NICE!

  • Kyle4

I don’t really like Nicki Minaj, but that was a legitimate criticism (that these shows usually refrain from showing). It was a lot better than the normal pandering the judges give to contestants./

I’m with Nicki on this one. Give it to them (and us) straight! She wasn’t rude, just brutally honest. Besides, all the other guys were much better than Matheus.

  • Ann

Nicki on a good day is great. But half the time Nicki is just irritating. Couldn’t help but laugh when she told that guy who was freaking out to put up at least one minute of professionalism when she herself looked half awake/hung over wearing sunglasses in a dark auditorium with her ugly corn wig and her hat pushed down over it. Can’t say I prefer the immobile queen Mariah over her, but sometimes it’s just grating when Nicki talks to the Idol wannabes like she’s some kind of groundbreaking, tried-and-tested musician herself.
