Mary J. Blige Divorce, Splits From Martin “Kendu” Isaacs
Mary J. Blige is getting divorced. The singer filed to divorce Martin “Kendu” Isaacs, her husband of 12 years, on Thursday.
While Blige’s petition does not list a date of separation, she blames the split on “irreconcilable differences.” She also indicated that Isaacs should not receive spousal support. The couple does not have any children together, but she is a stepmother to his three kids.
Blige and Isaacs wed in late 2003. He has also served as her manager. It’s unclear if they will still continue to work together in that capacity.
During a 2014 appearance on “The Wendy Williams Show,” Blige clarified remarks she made in an interview about not allowing Isaacs to have female friends. The performer said her husband still has women friends from before they got together, and any new ones are mutual pals that they share. “That was taken totally out of context,” she insisted.
Blige also reflected on her wedding and expressed gratitude to Isaacs for staying with her (see video below at 5:30-mark). The now-former couple would’ve celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary this December. Gossip Cop has reached out for comment. The divorce was first reported by TMZ. Blige and Isaacs are pictured above at the Vanity Fair Oscars party earlier this year.
UPDATE: A rep for Blige says in a statement, “Ms. Blige is saddened to say it is true that she has filed for divorce, saying sometimes things don’t work how we hoped they would. But, there is a divine plan and a reason for everything. Mary will continue writing and working on her album which is due out later this year along with her world tour. She thanks and appreciates her fans for their support and love through this very difficult emotional time.”
