Mark Ballas Injures Back Again, May Not Perform On “Dancing With The Stars”
Mark Ballas has reportedly injured his back again, and may not be able to perform on Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
According to a People source, Ballas “injured his back at camera blocking rehearsal on Sunday.” The source notes, “It’s an old injury that he aggravated. It’s up in the air if he’ll be able to perform tonight.”
Whether Ballas takes the floor with partner Paige VanZant will be determined in part by whether he gets medical clearance by a doctor later Monday. He and the UFC fighter are slated to do a salsa to the Don Omar song “Danza Kuduro” for “Latin Night.” But if Ballas is unable to participate, “DWTS” troupe member Alan Bersten is prepared to step in in his place.
As Gossip Cop reported at the time, Ballas previously suffered a lower back injury in April 2013, compressing two discs as he tried to perfect a lift for the show. Then in May 2014, his shoulder popped out as he rehearsed for the season 18 finale. The following month, the pro dancer was in a car accident that led to whiplash and more back problems.
This is the second known injury so far this season. As Gossip Cop reported, deaf contestant Nyle DiMarco had to get stitches at the hospital after being hit in the face by partner Peta Murgatroyd during rehearsal.
Ballas has not mentioned the situation on social media, and it comes barely two weeks into the competition. Gossip Cop has reached out to a rep for more information. We will have live “Dancing With The Stars” coverage tonight.
UPDATE: Ballas did not receive medical clearance thanks to his newly-slipped disc, and had to sit out the performance. His prognosis for the rest of the season is up in the air, pending a CT scan Tuesday. “I’m hopeful I’ll be back,” he said during the live broadcast.
