WATCH: Former Voice Contestant Mark Andrew Wows With Jungle Book Song “Be Like You” on American Idol (VIDEO)
Former “Voice” contestant” Mark Andrew brought a little Disney flair to “American Idol” on Wednesday. Check out the video below!
Andrew was on Team Shakira during season 4 of “The Voice” in 2013, ultimately getting eliminated during the battle rounds. Now the 29-year-old first-time father admitted that he was at the FOX music competition’s age limit, and viewed his try-out as his last chance to make it in the music business. Andrew, who currently works in his family’s landscaping and construction business to support his wife and baby boy, said he previously “always tried to put music first.” Tearing up, the contestant explained he decided to pursue “Idol” to show his son that you “can chase after your dreams.”
Andrew started off performing “Soulshine” by the Allman Brothers, accompanying himself with an acoustic guitar. Keith Urban wanted to see how his voice would sound on a different track, and the aspiring star interestingly chose to sing “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book. The move paid off, and scored him a golden ticket to Hollywood.
“It’s that voice. It’s that tone,” gushed Jennifer Lopez. “It’s so pleasant to me. I love it.” Harry Connick Jr. told Andrew, “I’d like to hear you on record. I really dig you.” In fact, the judge was bummed the audition didn’t continue longer. After Andrew left the room, Connick told his colleagues, “I didn’t want him to stop. I wanted him to play the rest of the tune.” Perhaps it goes without saying, but Andrew’s “Voice” past was not mentioned during his audition
And, believe it or not, this is not the first time a contestant has wowed with a surprising Disney song. As Gossip Cop reported at the time, back in 2013 Urban was judging with Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj when Zoanette Johnson received a standing ovation for her take on “Circle of Life.” Watch Andrew’s full audition below!
