WATCH: Maiya Sykes Told She “Could Win This Show” on The Voice Premiere
Maiya Sykes got all four coaches to turn around as she closed out the second half of “The Voice” season 7 premiere on Tuesday. The contestant was mere lines into “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith when Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Pharrell, and Gwen Stefani hit their buzzers.
And turning around wasn’t enough for Pharrell — he also got on his feet for the duration of Sykes’ soulful and powerful performance. Pharrell stood up again to make his pitch, comparing Sykes to Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, but stressing he wants to “amplify” her personal sound.
Stefani called the singer’s voice “ridiculous,” and Shelton told her, “You just made my day.” He then declared, “I think you could win this show. I really do.” But Stefani was ready to fight — or as Levine said “bribe” — and walked close to the stage to show off her shoes and promise the Los Angeles native goods from her many collections.
Levine then chimed in that he has two trophies to offer from his two wins on the series. “I have three trophies from ‘The Voice’ and a credit card,” quipped Shelton. “We can go buy you some damn clothes if that’s what you want.” Pharrell, in response, said Sykes doesn’t need clothes but deserves her own trophy.
Sykes, who found the judges’ battling “hilarious,” ultimately chose Pharrell, all because he stood up for her! Check out the videos below!
