Madonna: Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is a “Redo” of “Express Yourself”

Nearly one year after Lady Gaga released her single “Born This Way,” Madonna is finally commenting on claims that the song bears more than a few similarities to her own hit “Express Yourself.”

When she first heard the track, Madonna recalls, “I thought ‘What a wonderful way to redo my song.’”

She tells Newsweek, “I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was… interesting.”

After Gaga debuted the song last February, many fans and critics felt it borrowed its melody and theme from Madonna’s 1989 single.

Earlier this year, Gaga herself addressed the controversy during an appearance on “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” where she said she’s “the hugest fan personally and professionally” of the pop icon.

But she also claimed Madonna and her team were “sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single. And if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be.”

Now, it seems, Madonna is singing a different tune.

What do you think of Madonna’s comments?

well, I think she now cares because she is soon to release her new album. Now that she is back on the race she has to keep the Queen title as long as she can, even if it means throwing dirt on Gaga’s face. Well Madonna, you are doing well on being rough, cause Lady Gaga is talented as hell and could take your title away someday

no way gaga will ever rack up the success of Madonna

Did Madonna forget that the whole idea for Express Yourself came from Respect by Otis Redding. Yes Born This Way sounds similar musically, but that’s about it. They’re completely different songs saying to completely different things.

I think Madonna is just now trying to start shit because her new album is coming out soon. I love Madonna to death but really? Wait a whole year and just before your new music starts coming out to say something about Born This Way?

so many young kids bonded over this song and it helped them except themselves and madonna seeks trash it’s significance to say “Look at Me”. Get over it Madonna.

  • Lindsey

I find this hilarious. Gaga claims to be original and unique, but she’s just another pop singer.

  • AlexLittleMonster

I love how Gaga’s the mature one all the time. She’s humble, and doesn’t talk crap about others. She’s a true artist… come on guys, she didn’t “copy” the song, there’s so many melodies that can sound similar. This is all just jealousy on other singers’ parts.

Madonna is the last person who can talk about stealing other peoples ideas, pictures and songs. She has ripped of many photographs of Marlyn Monroe, Gretta Garbo and many many more, the caparisons are printed all over the net and Its amazingly funny to see just how much “inspiration” she has herself used, over her career. She is the queen of calming she has written a song when really all she has done is change one line of someone else’s song. She needs to get over herself! There is nothing worse then seeing a 50 year old women trying to stay relevant in a youthful industry, its painful to watch.. Its time to hand the crown over “Queen Madonna”. I’m not saying Gaga didn’t use Madonna as inspiration with the song, but Madonna is not really one who should bitch about it!

    I agree with her.

I’m disappointed in you. Your quotes do not indicate a change of opinion on Madonna’s part, or a lack of support. Even a year ago she did not say the tune was unfamiliar. You sound like the rags you normally correct.

  • French Flies

That’s exactly what I thought when I first heard it.

  • Ee

Anyone with ears knows GaGa stole that song from Madonna and Madonna will get plenty of publicity for her album .Come back in 10 years and if GaGa is still around then maybe she can be talked about in the same breath as Madonna.

I forced myself to watch G-G on tv one night. My first thought was – she’s taken so much from Madonna. The more I watched her the less I liked her. My last thought was – why do so many people like her? Madonna should have talked about this long ago and sued G-G. Perhaps that would have put an end to the G-G circus freak act!

  • Lisa

GaGa didn’t just “borrow” that song, she is literally walking the path that Madonna created/cleared. There would be no GaGa without her Madge-isty.

I just don’t get it why waiting until now?

    AMEN!!!

the only thing is that Madonna was consistent with her music. gaga is going so far off the beaten path and her new stuff is horrid. all for shock value. come on gaga!! bring back your good music and not this crap as of late. thanks.

  • Jennnifer

GaGa has never claimed anything. Those claims come from media comments.

  • Jennifer

I’ve listened to both songs a couple of times after reading this and, sorry, I don’t hear anything but the vaguest of similarities in a couple of riffs. Other than that, no. I think people with nothing better to do are digging in the deeper parts of the doodoo pile to try to make an issue of a non-issue. I don’t think GaGa has to prove her talent or worth at this point. She has more than established herself as a writer and an artist.

As for Madonna, I agree with other posters that she’s trying to get more publicity for her upcoming release. And maybe a little bit of green-eyed monster working in the mix, because, let’s face it… GaGa is ‘today” and doing well and, well… Madonna is pretty yesterday… like last century. Just sayin’…

  • French Flies

Having watched Madonna’s career as it unfolded, I wish I could make it clear how hard she worked and how innovative she was. She should not be minimized or considered “old school”. Gaga has a great deal of talent but it is squandered in the interest of shock and pop. I am truly not a fan of either, but credit needs to be given where it is due.

I’ve listened to “Express Yourself” and “Born This Way”. They do not sound similar at all.
Born This Way is an anthem to men and women of all races, religions…etc. to accept themselves the way they are.
Express Yourself is an anthem for women to get their men to prove how much they love them.
Personally I think Born This Way sounds a bit like “Vogue”
