Madonna Uses Nazi Imagery — Including Hitler, Swastikas — During Israel Concert

VIDEO

(YouTube)

Madonna used Nazi imagery, including swastikas and Adolf Hitler, during a video interlude at her concert in Israel on Thursday.

The visuals were among a series of symbols, photos and clips projected on screens to accompany the singer’s song “Nobody Knows Me.”

At one moment in the montage, Madonna is wearing Hitler’s mustache and a swastika on her forehead.

Also seen are the Iron Crosses used in Nazi Germany.

The Nazi section comes amid a flurry of other images of violence, war, political protests, and other highly-charged visuals.

However, the decision to put Nazi imagery — on giant screens – in Israel is sparking controversy, with many commentators saying it should not have been included, regardless of the context or message.

What do you think?

The video is below.

Madonna using sensationalism in her music? OMG!! Say it isn’t so!

It’s Madonna, what did you expect?

Yet another Celebrity Doing Something Utterly irresponsible and disrespectful. BUT @mrsbradley you are right We should expect nothing less out of her. It’s what she does

  • tosenheejk

This is one of the most insensitive things that I have ever seen. Anything to keep her name in the public eye.

  • D. Martin

You expect someone in their 50′s to have more sense.

  • Report345

You guys are idiots. Look at the context of the video.

  • D. Martin

    Hi Jaye!

Yeah but still…it seems insensitive to do that THERE. I have not seen the video (I’m at work) but that is a very dark and painful time for them. They don’t need reminders. Not at a concert anyway. If she was gonna show something like that then it should have at least been a free concert. Even then…it just seems that there is a sensitivity chip missing.

  • http://twitter.com/DanJudelson Dan Judelson

Report345 I see a commendable plea for tolerance for homosexuals in respect of the names and tragically short lives of those, like Tyler Clementi featured; I see a vague but equally welcome condemnation of dictators but see no reason to foreground – so vividly – the specifically Nazi imagery other than courting controversy (a familiar Madonna trope) while ignoring the risk of glamourising the most universally condemned murderous regime the world has yet seen.

  • Elizzardbreath72

Actually, this is the only report I’ve seen on it. I haven’t seen any “controversy” and just got off the phone with someone in Israel who says there is none. “Gossip Cop” indeed

  • Peaceoutalyssa

This is very absurd ……How could she use this kind of imagery in her concert? Doesn’t she know that peoples ancestors suffered alot cause of hitler!! Someone needs to knock some sense into that woman!! She is a disgarce!!!

  • Eyeroll

The only thing I see from her and in this video is desperation.

  • Phweston0269

It was gratutous and insensitive~~not to mention, excrutiatingly repetitious lyrically speaking. Does anyone else out there hate auto-tune as much as I do?

  • Phweston0269

    Sorry~~gratuitous!

  • Danny

Why is everyone making this a ‘controversy’? This IS Madonna, she’s had many things in past shows and will continue to have these type of things so why get so worked up over it?

  • Duh…

Maybe because people are EXTREMELY offended. It’s like telling African-Americans to get over it when yet another person is racist against them. Madonna is of the devil himself and this is just sick. She can get attention another way, this is just a disgrace to human life. You can’t one minute be sensitive to homosexuals plights and then irreverent to the pain that Jews went through during the Holocaust and unfortunately even today. She’s full of crock.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_63SFUJ622FEIJ65S5YKIQG425A Sophia

Guys, the context of the video doesn’t matter. What she did was insensitive and rude. The Holocaust isn’t something to be taken lightly, it was a time that most people would like to try to forget. Using those images was cruel and disrespectful.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Anderson/1668672991 Steven Anderson

It was a brief couple of seconds, if that, out of the entire segment. What’s the big deal? If the video also included images of the twin towers in NYC would you also expect her to cut that out when she performs in NYC? People find offense to easily these days.

  • Salll

All auto-tune does, is show someones complete lack of talent!!

  • http://www.mygossip565.com/ JasonSantoro

    Allright Jennifer Aniston.

  • smartchick

Just because she is Madonna does NOT give her a licence to get away with anything just to create controversy. She is rude, insensitive, disgraceful, and cruel. What is she thinking? Publicity is not worth the poor taste this woman exhibits. She would get publicity without all the crap….even if she is competing with the new, younger group of popular entertainers. THINK about your audience Madonna, and adjust your show accordingly.

  • @Sophia

Sophia-The context of the video has EVERYTHING to do with it. Watch the video before you judge. If you have a brain you can see it wasn’t meant as disrespectful.

  • Danny

I get why people would be offended if the video itself was offending though. She wasn’t spreading a message about the Holocaust or the pain or whatever AT ALL. I don’t see this as insensitive, there’s nothing wrong with this video so I don’t get why everyone is trying to make this controversial.

  • Jiffharr

If people would pay attention to the whole message, there is no controversy. The Hitler images showed during the lyrics, “it’s a set up until you’re fed up.” It’s a montage that shows evil and putting an end to it. Why can’t people grow up and stop trying to create drama? Are we that bored? It actually has a positive message if you slow down and pay attention.

  • MadonnaMisunderstood

    Precisely.
This is a strong message from a very strong woman.
Very clear she is saying we are and have been a WORLD in TROUBLE.
And Madonna has never been one not to get her point across, which is
    what she did.
Israeli intelligence, to self…the highest in the world.
Pretty certain they are more than capable of understanding what Madonna’s
    video meant.
At this point in Madonna’s life and a very successful career, she has no need to gain
the world’s attention other than to help point our past mistakes anyway she has too.
Stop being so offended by everything and pay attention to the disasters she has pointed out
then ask yourself “What can I do to make a difference,if anything so we can avoid any more?”
    And Thank you Report345.

  • LeslieAnn

No. It was a harsh reminder of what could take place again in this world if we give the wrong people power.
Those images should be seen over and over again so we never forget.
What is insensitive and rude is to deny these things ever took place even have the history books changed so our youth doesn’t acknowledge it.
Come on Sophia, you seem like you have a good head on your shoulders.

  • Anonymous

She is too old for all this. Stupid and un-entertaining. A woman her age should have a more seasoned understanding about life. Madonna turned into a wannabe young artist. Hang up your pom poms already.

There is also a thing such as tact and this certainly does not fall into that category. Certain thing are not okay no matter what the intent may be. This not only insults Isreal but Germany as well which acknowledges its past faults publicly and has frowned on it themselves. I listend to the video as well as checked out the title of the song. “Nobody knows me” Who is she really feeling sorry for, the dictators and those who have murdered so many innocent people just because they wanted to or the victims themselves

  • Land Of The Lost

Not the Strong women card, give me a break.Grow up if your an adult stop the idol worshipping.Placing tragedies from the past to Pop music F—-in stupid. If you reply with the other card {ignorant} your just a moron.you deserve to be named called.

  • Travis

And you truly are in The Of The Lost and you deserve to stay there.

  • WeThePeople

    Like our President???

  • Ovadiah

As an Israeli myself, I can comfortably tell you this we take NO issue with Madonna.
We also would like the entire World to remember what our people have been through. Thank you for your concern though.

  • Ovadiah

I humbly thank you for your point of view and agree with you.

  • D. Martin

    Hmm…I knew I’d heard that somewhere…

  • MadonnaMisunderstood

Your reply to my comment is one way you are choosing to make a difference…this is crystal clear.
    Wonderful just wonderful.
I do not play cards, nor do I do any idol worship.
Just plain stupid and ignorant to ASSume that I would.
Perhaps you should take your own advice if you are an adult.

  • MadonnaMisunderstood

    In agreement with you.

  • NickR

Most modern day musicians use some form of auto-tune.
But then most modern day musicians have next to zero talent.

  • eva

What does that have to do with anything? Why bring the president into? Kind of reaching aren’t you .. you don’t have much sense ..

  • Irismonkey48

I dont care what the context of the video is it is just the wrong way to get a message across.

  • WeThePeople

Not reaching at all both useless in these times…It was a political statement in concert…try and expand your mind and gain some wisdom.

  • LostYouAre

Please go back to what your good Hockey scores.

  • Miss Suzanne

I see she’s getting more tacky – & a lot stranger – in her older age! I’m actually pretty surprised that she would play in Isreal, considering that the Taliban, who come and go where they please, swore that they were going to would behead her! (and one other female singer who’s name escapes me at the moment.)

The swastika symbol is not the same image used by the Nazis. The Nazis adopted the same symbol but made it face toward the right, or clockwise. The one used by Madonna faces left, counter-clockwise, and is the exact same one used by many ancient people throughout the past several thousand years, including many Asian cultures and religions. I say this not to minimize what Madonna did but to suggest either (1) she drew that swastika facing left out of ignorance or (2) she used the left-facing symbol so she can have the excuse it was not representing the right-facing Nazi symbol.
