Madonna Takes Swipe at Lady Gaga, Jokes That She Helped “Write” Born This Way

(GettyImages.com)

(GettyImages)

Madonna took a new swipe at Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” during a recent Brazilian television interview, continuing to draw attention to the similarities between the hit and her own “Express Yourself.”

The Material Girl says she’s a “big fan” of Gaga’s song before adding, “I’m glad that I could help her write it.”

Oh, SNAP!

It’s not the first time Madonna has jabbed Gaga over the song.

Last January, Madonna told Newsweek she thought the similarities between the two songs were “interesting” and said her first thought upon hearing “Born This Way” was, “What a wonderful way to redo my song.”

She later created an “Express Yourself”/”Born This Way” mashup that she performed on her world tour.

What do you think about the ongoing Madonna/Gaga “Born This Way” controversy?

    STFU Madonna.

  • ThanksKstew

    Trolling lately Madonna, obviously.

  • Anonymous

    Move on already.

  • Sigh

The only person causing any controversy is Madonna. She’s extremely bitter and she’s making herself look like a child. This her way of staying relevant in the tabloids, by continuously bashing Gaga. How pathetic.

  • Lori

I’m not a Gaga fan, but Madonna’s big green monster is on full display. Sad old woman…

  • Darkeclipse

    thats not cool madonna

she’s acting like a little kid

  • LJS

Oh please. Put your boob away and move on.

  • D. Martin

I’ve heard both songs and I’m not picking up any similarity except for maybe the messge of acceptance. I think Madonna needs to get over this. Besides, if she’s so convinced that Gaga stole her song then why hasn’t she filed something in court? I have to agree with @Lori — sounds a lot like jealousy. For a long time Madonna was IT. But – just as in life – it can’t always be your time forever. Madonna had her time. I’m not saying she’s old. I’m not saying she’s finished. I’m just saying that now it’s Lady Gaga’s time. Before long it will be someone else’s. That’s life.

desperate old hag with an ego like a bag of dicks, lol…

  • Silvervixen8668

born this way does not in any way sound like express yourself. Gaga obiously has more talent writing, singing and performing. Madonna only lip syncs and she cannot sing.

  • Lindsey

Lady Gaga copied everything from Madonna. I don’t particularly like either of them, but I side with Madonna on this one, because I value originality.

  • Danny

When she first talked about it, she said nice things about Lady Gaga and that she wasn’t annoyed but it felt reductive. That was fine, it wasn’t really rude or anything. The mashup sort of did take a shot at Gaga but it also made sense since the songs are similar. But idk, this seems a bit too far. She’s gotten her point across already.

  • lovecritters

Madonna has the nerve to talk about Lady Gaga swiping her song? Isn’t Madonna the one who “BORROWED” heavily from Marilyn Monroe (e.g. Material Girl) and the NYC drag queens (e.g. Vogue). Madonna, you can’t place a demand on someone that you haven’t met yourself!

  • lovecritters

Madonna “BORROWED” heavily from Marilyn Monroe (e.g. Material Girl) and the NYC drag queens (e.g. Vogue). Madonna was never original, she just “borrowed” from everyone else.

  • Hypocratia

Madonna needs to understand that she´s not young anymore. She can call herself MDNA but that doesn´t make her 22 or able to write songs for that agegroup. You got to be 22 to write songs about it. She just posing (as always) and thinking just because she´s got a young lover and using young musicians that she “hip” to the situation.
I think she was really great and up there but that was decades ago. She hasn´t done a great album since Ray of Light.
If she did a mature album maybe she´ll be intresting again.

  • http://www.facebook.com/xataii Xata Jota

If what you say is true, I guess it’s just another thing Gaga “borrowed” from Madonna…
I’m not a fan of neither, but the thing that really makes me think about this issue born this way/express yourself is that Gaga only said she was inspired by Madonna’s song ’cause people realized it was too obvious to deny the similarities…

I must confess I like gaga’s song, but everytime I listen to them, It remembers me of songs I used to listen on the radio when I was younger in the 90′s… I mean, I always have the feeling “I know this song”… It’s like when I listened the song “your love” from nick minaj… When I played the song for the 1st time I said to myself “I know this song in the bakground”, and when I looked for it on wiki I found out it was a song from 1994… No wonder they compared tis song to gaga’s work….

So… I like gaga’s song but it just drives me crazy when she claims to be original when I know I’ve heard that songs before… it’s like listening to a remix of 90′s songs (I guess that’s why I like it)… I just wish she would come clear in this matter….

I think gaga’s fans are just too young or weren’t a big fan of radio stations in the 90′s…

    this is nonsense

  • Tonydtonyjoel

Gaga needs to get her own style

  • GooglyMoogly

This must have run through Madonna’s head.
“Hmm, nobody seems to care anymore with the Swastikas on world leaders heads, nobody is in an uproar over me exposing my body…..I did get press from that Gaga thing. By George that’s what I’ll do again! I’ll start a fuss over the similarities of our songs!! I’m brilliant…now where is my prune juice?”

  • Ms. Chevious

    I think you nailed it.

  • Magedagger

Madonna lives off today’s artist to stay relevant. She should be dead already. She’s a bitch and will always be a bitch. At least Gaga is mature, and Madonna act’s as if she isn’t her age. Her daughter is more mature than her, especially with her latest comment on the whole Gaga Vs. Madonna feud.

  • Malossi_32

let’s put it this way- Lady Gaga is for this generation- and what a generation it is- mediocre, shallow, stupid and utterly lacking in originality. Madonna has nothing more to prove. The end.

  • Belladom

The real shock is that it took Madonna this long to make comments about it.

  • Gen

This song has been out for ages, why is Madonna still going on about it? Fact is Lady Gaga has a heart that Madonna has never had herself. Lady Gaga would never go around slashing someone else reputation just for a little publicity. Madonna needs to realize that Lady Gaga has more talent then her and a warm heart. It’s no wonder she is jealous it must be hard walking around with so much anger. Sad sad women

  • Lindsey Sage

When did Gaga claim to be original?

  • Lindsey Sage

This is so annoying. Gaga is already moving on to her next album and will release a new single soon and Madonna is STILL carrying on with this Born This Way nonsense. She knows that if she talks about Gaga that the tabloids will listen. It helps her stay relevant. It’s sad that most of her headlines these days involve Gaga and not her singles, or shows. Why is she even bothered by a 26 year old who hasn’t even been in the game more than 5 years? Good grief.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4ZF5IOEMR3V6TSANM6DPAM3A2U Cindy

Madonna (maddog) hasn’t done a “mature” album because usually that reveals if you have a great singing voice. maddog doesn’t have that, so all she does is do the same stuff over and over. Example of versatility would be Lady GaGa singing with Tony Bennett. Lady GaGa has the talent to do pretty much any kind of album.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Williams/597317755 Robert Williams

Aw Madonna…. this is so sad! We get it, you THINK Gaga stole your song, you reminded us quiet a few times. Stop acting like a damn child.

  • http://www.facebook.com/xataii Xata Jota
  • Gagaisaman

said a worthless, brain dead, tasteless gaga worshiper… I swear the new generation is a huge fail.

  • Gagaisaman

No, she’s just better at causing controversy than gaga will ever be. Gaga chose the wrong one to copy…

  • Gagaisaman

It was a joke, dummy. Sad old woman worth nearly a billion dollars and with 10 times the fans gaga will ever have.

  • Gagaisaman

said someone who is likely tone deaf, has zero critical listening skills. Let’s put it this way. There is a reason that people continually keep getting reminded of a 30 year old Madonna song when Gaga’s song is played. You know what that reason is? It’s because in some form or another, Gaga copied her. Get over it. Also I don’t think Madonna is as interested in perusing monetary rewards in court as she is in sending Gaga the message that it’s time for her to become a UNIQUE artist and move on with her career. I just love how most Gaga fans, who are mostly young kinds (and that’s why they didn’t catch the fact that she was copying Madonna), jump to defend gaga, even though had someone copied gaga as profusely as gaga did madonna, they would ALSO defend gaga. Wow that was a tongue twister… lol.

  • Gagaisaman

Yeah! That’s why people keep saying it reminds them of “The Long And Winding Road” by the Beatles! DUH! Obviously it sounds something like it or people wouldn’t keep being reminded of it. If Gaga has MORE talent in writing, she would not need to be so derivative of other artists songs. Instead, perhaps Gaga has almost no talent as a writer. Accept reality, get over it, move on.

  • Gagaisaman

@lovecritters. SORRY, but it’s one thing to copy someone’s clothing style on purpose for ONE video as Madonna did. (CLOTHING), but it’s another thing to try to be a sound a like and sing like Madonna. Gaga is a copy cat, and you are a kid. If you accept it, maybe you will grow up faster. I know you must be a young gaga fan, either that or a fool. Either way, if you want to talk about HOW original someone was, Gaga wasn’t one tenth as original as Madonna was and she wrote all her own songs. Many of which invented new styles, never before heard. And now in 2012, Gaga uses those styles.

  • Gagaisaman

@Lindsay Sage, clever, but thus supporting the point that she is not original.

  • Gagaisaman

@Hypocratia, You need to understand that being an original artist has nothing to do with being young or old. Gaga, isn’t that young either, and neither is she original. But sounds like what you are saying is, ‘HEY Madonna, you’re too old to make music, so now we can let Gaga off the hook for not being original. It’s Gaga’s turn to take your role”. THAT IS BULL! There is no such thing as “someone’s turn”. Gaga copied her style plain and simple. Also if what you say is really true and it’s not Madonna’s time, but it is Gaga’s time, then it should be time for Gaga to be an ORIGINAL artist. Not a copy cat, or someone who sings like Madonna. Since Madonna’s time is over, it should be time for Gaga to stop sounding like her too.

  • Gagaisaman

@GooglyMoogly, wow, how nice an simplistic of an obvious gaga fan. Except the only GIANT HOLE in your theory is that Madonna got tons of attention with her recent tour, and her new hit singles, and her youtube page has millions of views, and she’s already worth near a billion dollars. So there goes your theory as it gets ripped to shreds and blow away by the winds. I call it a typical under 30 (apple ipod generation) age fantasy.

  • Gagaisaman

@iLindsay Sage, it hasn’t occured to you yet that her comment was a joke, and THAT’s why it took her so long to make it. Because she never had an agenda to begin with. But you’re right. Now that Madonna’s new songs are out, Gaga’s producers have Madonna’s new songs to twist into something new. I’m sure Gaga’s next hit will probably sound a lot like “Give me all your lovin”, and a 15 year old girl, just like you will come along and try to defend her with delusional fantasies about how Madonna has no hit songs and isn’t relevent. Let’s recap. Madonna got famous in 1983, nearly 30 years ago and she’s still famous. Not due to gaga, sorry little girl. She was also famous 25 years post lucky star BEFORE Gaga was known. So there’s a high likelyhood she will still be famous in 5 more years or for 35 years. However there is no gaurantee Gaga will be as her career is only 4 or 5 years old. Maybe she will, maybe she won’t. But Madonna has proven her self with a 30+ year career. Time to grow up? I think so Lindsay. But then again, all smart mouthed kids think they know it all until they do actually grow up. Good luck on that. Because if you can’t see it from both directions, you won’t be able to see how gaga could be relevent 5 years from now, as by then, she will no longer be the current thing, and the new generation will be 5 years younger than you…. figure it out.

  • D. Martin

I’m really not a “fan” of either one. I hear their songs now and then and I like them. Period. And the only person that is saying that Gaga copied Madonna is — wait for it — MADONNA!

My post did not say that Madonna was over — far from it. But I don’t think Gaga copied Madonna. I just don’t.

  • CaseyMoeRbst

Where’s your sense of humor? That’s our Madge being funny. When I first read it I laughed out loud, enough for people to turn and look at me. I’m 56 years old and I love them both. Trust me, they are both smart business women and they know what makes the $$$. I bet in real life they like each other. Heck, they were both play fighting on SNL a year or two ago. I fell off the couch when Madonna asked Gaga, ‘What the hell is a disco stick?

  • Camille

Tired of hearing about it. I’m 64 years old, love Gaga and I have always disliked “Madonna” she’s trash. How dare she take the Virgin Mary’s title.

  • Shamusn

@gagaisaman Sheesh, wtf is your problem? Why do you hate Lady Gaga so damn much? If it’s just because of this, that’s a pretty lame excuse. Okay, maybe a chord or two sounds the same, but if you’re going to point out that similarity, you can do it in a million other songs. Also, it it’s a copy, how come it did better on the charts?? I personally think Lady Gaga is great. She can play multiple instruments, she can do country, rock, pop, opera, etc, and SHE writes all of her songs. And did any of her other hit songs from born this way (Hair, Yoü and I, Edge of Glory, Judas, Marry the Night) have any similarities to other songs? No, because she is original. And I don’t mean to bag on Madonna, because I do like her music, but come on-Madonna is famous for copying other peoples’ work. But enough with this arguing. Both artists have/are revolution(ized/izing) music, and both put out some pretty damn good music. But I’m guessing you’re ignorant and are just gonna say Gaga sucks and Madonna is great.

  • 7Famark

How does she not have her own style?…Okay, fine, Born This Way has the same chord progression and melodic rhythm as Express Yourself…but, have we forgotten about every other track in GaGa’s catalog? She’s made plenty of original music, is classically trained, can actually play an instrument, writes her own music, and has a beautiful voice live…And while you can say that some of her imagery is ripped from Madonna, she has taken it far beyond anything Madonna ever has. It’s crazy how one similar song pops up out of a massive list of songs and people are so ready to crucify GaGa and call her a plagiarist…last time I checked Madonna has “drawn inspiration” (to put it lightly) from many, many, many other artists/photographers/cultural icons.

  • 7Famark

It’s comical that there seem to be so many Madonna fans that dismiss the intelligence of someone simply because they are a GaGa fan…yet, you can’t seem to put together a coherent sentence. Though, I wouldn’t expect an intelligent response from someone with the screen name “Gagaisaman”…quite mature. On the contrary, Madonna’s album has taken massive amounts of negativity from critics, and if it weren’t for her constant need to issue statements that are digs at GaGa, she wouldn’t be in the press nearly as often as she has been. The whole reductive comment incident stirred up a lot of publicity for Madonna, and she has continued to publicly attack GaGa. And you want to hear the funny part? The one that has handled the situation maturely is GaGa, who is 27 years Madonna’s senior. Isn’t age supposed to bring maturity? I guess not in Madonna’s case.

This is how GaGa has responded and handled the situation”
“It sometimes makes people feel better about themselves, you know, to put other people down, or make fun of them, or maybe make mockery of their work and that doesn’t make me feel good at all,” said Gaga in concert. “I don’t even want to fight back because it’s more important to me to keep writing music. Because that’s really all I care about, is the music.”

A very mature and well articulated response from someone so young, perhaps Madge should take notes.

  • 7Famark

GaGa has repeatedly shown that she can re-invent herself, which is the key to a long lasting career. I wouldn’t be so quick to say she might not be around in five years.

  • DB

Actually, Express Yourself did better than Born this Way. EY = US – Gold Certified, UK – Silver Certifed, BTW – nothing. Also, Express Yourself was Madonna’s second single not her first off the album. A fair comparison would be Like a Prayer to Born this Way and do you really want to have that comparison made? Like a Prayer – US Platinum + no.1. everywhere!

  • DB

For someone who claims to not be a Lady Gaga fan you certainly spend a lot of time defending her. I think you have lied just a tincey wincey bit.

  • DB

So I think it is such a shame that Madonna and Lady Gaga fans are in this stupid war with each other. I am a Madonna fan and always will be because she was my generations hero. Madonna paved the way for this generations Lady Gaga’s and Lady Gaga would even admit that. Madonna was phenomenal in breaking new ground and pushing against societal values. That is why she is the most successful female artist of all time, has sold the most records, and has the biggest tour of all time. But, Lady Gaga finds herself in an unenviable position that she now needs to be original in the giant shadow that is Madonna, and as long as she wants to create dance music she always will be and in a way that sucks. I think despite this Lady Gaga has had great success and has carved out her own niche and style. I think she has a high fashion style. Yes she has copied Madonna, but it’s hard not too since Madonna has already done nearly everything. So Lady Gaga does it with her own sense of style and twist and I think that is still credible, stylish and cool in it’s own right. She has also pushed the boundaries and is a good voice for this generation. I have no doubt, and I hope, she will go on and have a successful career because she is great. It is completely disrespectful, and a bold faced lie, for Gaga fans to abuse Madonna and claim that she is not relevant or original, or that Gaga hasn’t been heavily influenced by her, as it is annoying for the Gaga fans to constantly be reminded that what Gaga is doing is also unoriginal and a copy cat version. Both stars are about the same thing – dance music, pushing boundaries, been at the cutting edge of trends, and we should embrace them both since they both do what we love.

You call little monsters stupid, young and immature but look at yourself. I’ve scrolled down reading and every comment defending Gaga, you have to put your two cents in. It’s fine to write your opinion but do you have nothing better to do than to bash someone? When I don’t like someone I don’t waste my time mustering up the energy to hate on them (as both you AND Madonna have). Even if she believes that Gaga copied her song and wants to comment on that, why not just comment and move on. The jabs at gaga just get worse and worse because she knows they’re getting her attention. She doesn’t need attention, like you said. It feels lately that Madonna’s not in the game for the music or for herself or for her fans, but just to stay relevant. You might say that gaga copies Madonna but you can never say that Gaga doesn’t have heart and passion.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000650859097 Bria Sandifer

You’re right, people act like because one song is similar and because they’ve been compared in the past that we should forget all the drive that Gaga has put into her work. When people make art it’s almost impossible not to be similar to the people you listened to growing up. I personally would be a lot like Lady Gaga if I were to choose a career in music.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000650859097 Bria Sandifer

I’m a little monster (it’s what us Gaga fans call ourselves) and I’m honestly embarrassed at being called “childish” and “immature” because of a few people speaking only in ignorance and spite. There are always going to be people in a group of any kind that make everyone else in that group look bad. And since most people in this world focus on the negative, that negative portrayal then becomes the “definition” of what it is to be part of that group. I love Madonna. Lady Gaga wouldn’t be who she is, a lot of people wouldn’t be who they are, without her having been such a huge influence on pop culture and music in general. And it hurts me to see her up on stage making a fuss about something that’s not even worth her time. She’s a pop icon, and she needs to realize that. She will never be replaced or forgotten.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000650859097 Bria Sandifer

At first it seemed like just jokes but now it seems like she really has it out for Lady Gaga.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000650859097 Bria Sandifer

She didn’t say she had permission, she said that Madonna emailed her after the song came out and said that there were no hard feelings.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000650859097 Bria Sandifer

Just because she sings similarly and is different and ground breaking, that means she’s a copy cat? That, my friend, is truly BULL.
