Madagascar 3 Roars Past Prometheus in Weekend Box Office

BOX OFFICE

(DreamWorks)

It was animals versus aliens at this weekend box office, with the animated sequel Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted taking the top spot with $60.3 million.

Coming in second was the extraterrestrial horror flick Prometheus with a take of $50 million.

And nabbing third was  Snow White and the Huntsman with $23 million in ticket sales.

Fourth and fifth places went to Men in Black 3 and The Avengers with $13.5 million and $10.8 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($3.1 million), What to Expect When You’re Expecting ($2.7 million), Battleship ($2.3 million), The Dictator ($2 million) and Dark Shadows ($1.5 million).

This obsession of which movie wins the weekend box office is silly. I like to see how well a movie does in the box office. But to really care if one movie makes 3 million more then another when both are doing in excess of $50 million is really useless. At that dollar amount they are both winners. The true test is their drop off in the second weekend to see if they have gels and will make some long term money. Both movies are geared for a different audience so they are not really competition for the same dollar.

Snow white was the best movie ever <3

Pretty neat that SWATH managed 56 million with no IMAX or 3D, and this weekends movies are on nearly the same pace both having the advantage of 3D ticket prices and Prometheus having IMAX/IMAX3D as well.

I agree! It was a great movie and I can’t wait to see it again!

Yes, but Prometheus is R rated, which is much tougher as well as it is at alot less theaters than SWATH was opening weekend. Yes SWATH did great, but you are comparing apples to oranges. R movies always have a tougher sell (less people can see them) and yes IMAX and 3D help ticket prices so it is impossible to compare these films. How about we stop caring about how much the movie makes and start caring about whether they are good movies and whether people (not critics) like them. From what I can see and from what I have read, all three of these movies have been received well by the people who have seen them, and it looks like many have gone back for at least a second viewing. That is what makes a movie sucessful, not comparing how much money it makes or even looking at how much money it makes.

SWATH did very well better than predicted…. Prometheus is doing very well for R rating. Madadascar is doing as expected.

prometheous has a large fanbase thanks to Ridley Scott and is allien frnachise, SWATH is doing great

Snow white is not a 3D or IMAX and not even based on a famous book , and yet still strong in BO and the fact that it’s a knows story is good, and it’s opening weekend is A LOT more that “critics” expected.

SWATH was one of the worst movies I’ve seen this year. No chemistry between characters at alll and the girl from Twilight was playing the same character again. Boring!
