Luke Bryan Sorry for Looking at Lyrics and Watch During National Anthem (VIDEO)

Baseball fans were crying foul on Tuesday night when Luke Bryan looked down at written lyrics and his watch a couple of times while singing the National Anthem at the MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City, Missouri.

The country singer, who struck out with Americans who felt it was unpatriotic, took to Twitter on Wednesday to explain.

According to Bryan, he was concerned he’d make an error with the lyrics to the “Star-Spangled Banner” — and that he was running late.

Bryan tweeted, “I had a few keys words written down to insure myself that I wouldn’t mess up. I just wanted to do my best. I promise it was from the heart.”

“If I offended anyone with my approach I sincerely apologize. Anytime I sing the anthem it is an honor and my heart beats out of my chest,” he added.

Luke acknowledged, “I did check my watch,” noting, “because I knew the stealth bomber would fly over 2 minutes in and I knew a started a little late.”

What do you think of Bryan’s apology?

I’ve never heard of this guy before yesterday. I was actually watching the game with a few friends at a sports bar but we couldn’t hear the anthem. A few people commented that it looked like he was doung a bad job.

Eeh…people make mistakes. No biggie, but he should know the song before he agrees to sing it. He’s only getting one free pass from me.

A lot of people mess up the national anthem. I think it was cool that he wanted to do it the justice he felt it deserved. Oh, and since when does checking your watch constitute being rude in any way?

A couple of years ago, the Metropolitan Opera announced performances of a set of operas that run about four hours each. The tenor lead in two of them must memorize the words and music that would fill the pages of a small town’s phone book (if phone books existed any more). The man who did this, Jay Hunter Morris (look him up on Wikipedia) performed flawlessly on the stage in New York City and transmitted in HD TV to theaters around the world. (The Met has a prompter at the edge of the stage, but I don’t recall seeing Morris look at him or her once).

When you’re in the middle of something and you check your watch, some people consider that rude because it’s as if you can’t wait for it to be over.

If this is taken at face value with no context. I can see why people thought it was rude.

Glad Luke Bryan was concerned and wanted to do his best, that is what rehearsal and practice are for. As for the watch, I’d look for a stadium clock instead, and hope it’s in the direction of
Our Nation’s Flag, where everyone else should be looking.
