Lucy Hale: I Would Go Days Without Eating

Truth rating: 10

(Cosmopolitan)

Lucy Hale opens up about her eating disorder in the new Cosmopolitan.

The “Pretty Little Liars” star is on the magazine’s September cover and reveals that she used to have serious issues with her body and food.

“I’ve never really talked about this, but I would go days without eating,” says Hale. “Or maybe I’d have some fruit and then go to the gym for three hours.”

She adds, “I knew I had a problem… It was a gradual process but I changed myself.”

As it happens, “Pretty Little Liars” has dealt with the subject of eating disorders through Hanna Marin, the character played by Ashley Benson.

A number of young actresses, most notably Demi Lovato, have recently become more vocal about their personal struggles with body image.

Hopefully, public figures like Hale and Lovato discussing these serious issues will help lead young people to healthier choices.

It would have more impact if she admitted she still (clearly) deals with those issues today. As someone who actually fought through an eating disorder (and many other ones) I find it insulting that she uses it as a ‘sob story’ she supposedly overcame. Deal with it for real, then advertise it all you want. That’s what I think about that.

Ugh not another one. Do they all use the same publicist that tells them this is the way for more publicity and attention? Almost everyone I know has ‘struggled’ with some form of disordered eating. Lucy Hale coming out about it now is a publicity stunt and a lame one.

Totally agree, from my own experience I feel that eating disorders are a disease and it’s not something you can simply turn off. I still to this day suffer the effects of my eating disorder, even though I haven’t purged in years, I still have days where my first thought after eating is to purge. It is one thing to know something is wrong and another to choose not to do it. It’s a very slippery slope and some days are harder then others. When I hear women talking about eating disorders and how they simply just over came it I always roll my eyes because it really is not that simple. You don’t just wake up one day and decide that what you are doing is unhealthy and then never do it again, It takes work and normally therapy.
