Lorde Talks Taylor Swift, Bullying, and “Paralyzing” Nerves in Rolling Stone
Lorde graces the new cover of Rolling Stone as “The Girl Who Broke The Rules” and the “Unlikeliest Superstar in Pop.”
Lorde reveals she was “floored” to receive roses from Swift when her monster hit “Royals” hit number one, and says their relationship has flourished despite a rocky start.
As Gossip Cop reported in Octobor, Lorde said Swift was “so flawless” to the point of representing a kind of beauty that’s “so unattainable,” but later clarified her comments were misinterpreted.
“She was like, ‘It’s fine. If all you’ve done is call someone perfect, it’s not that bad,'” remembers Lorde.
The songstress says she goes to Swift to advice, calling her “super-good” at decorating, and says the country-pop star is among a rare breed of “real teenage voices.”
Lorde tells the magazine, “There are very few of us. There’s Tavi [Gevinson] and the Rookie [Magazine] group, King Krule, and, to an extent, Jake Bugg. The other teenagers sing other people’s songs, which is fine, but it’s not an authentic teenage experience.”
The singer admits she knows her views have gotten in her into trouble at times, and admits, “People around me, who I’m really close to, were like, ‘Do you have to express your opinions all the time?'”
And while Lorde stands by her remarks, she won’t stand for online bullying, which she and boyfriend James Lowe brutally faced last month.
“[I’m] not completely impervious to insult,” she confesses. “I’m a human being.”
But Lorde is adamant about keeping any insecurities in check.
“I get paralyzingly nervous a lot of times, so I tried bravado,” she says, referencing a Kanye West lyric. “The way I dress and carry myself, a lot of people find it strange or intimidating.”
She adds, “I think my whole career can be boiled down to the one word I always say in meetings: strength.”
Lorde’s full interview hits newsstands on Friday.
