Linda Thompson: Caitlyn Jenner “Kicked Manhood’s Butt” – Watch “GMA” Video
Linda Thompson opened up about her marriage to Caitlyn Jenner, then known as Bruce, on Tuesday’s “Good Morning America.” Watch below.
Thompson was on “GMA” to discuss her memoir, A Little Thing Called Life, which in large part deals with her romances with Jenner and Elvis Presley. During the interview, she recounted how Jenner first told her she was transgender… after they were happily married with two kids. Thompson shared, “My happiness was complete, until that day when Brody was 18 months old and Brandon was just about 3 and a half, and my remarkable husband came to me and said, ‘I need to tell you something about myself.’ He said, ‘I identify as a woman.'”
The award-winning songwriter admits she didn’t know that meant, leading Jenner to explain, “I would like to become female on the exterior, because I’ve always been female on the interior.” Thompson recalls, “It was earth-shattering, it was devastating. People can’t understand — ‘You must’ve had some kind of an idea.’ No! Nunca, nada, nothing!”
“My deeper compassion went to Bruce, for her to have felt so trapped in the wrong body. It broke my heart to think he had struggled so long, so hard,” Thompson said. But she also hoped Jenner wasn’t serious about transitioning. But things changed further when Jenner surprised her by dressing as a woman.
Thompson recalls, “I just crumbled. I think I even fell down in the hall… She said, ‘I’m so sorry. I just think it’s important you see who I authentically am.’ And not until that moment, I guess, did it sink into my psyche that that truly was who Caitlyn felt that she was. I had to respect that and honor that and move on with my life.”
Of course, it took several more decades for Jenner to officially transition, and Thompson seems to truly understand her ex-husband’s struggle. “I think more than anything it’s been a relief for Caitlyn to be able to emerge as her true self. For the rest of us, we love her,” she said, explaining, “But when I first met her, she was in a Bruce Jenner body. He was just an incredible person — still is. And I’ve since said to her, ‘You’ve gotta give yourself credit. You kicked manhood’s butt.'”
And Thompson isn’t afraid to joke about the situation, quipping, “Ladies and gentleman, Elvis Presley and Bruce Jenner have left the building.” Check out the video below.
