After three postponements, Judge Charles H. Solomon sentenced Lil Wayne to a year in prison for an attempted gun possession conviction and agreed to place him in protective custody during his incarceration.
The rapper also requested special medical attention while jailed due to dental problems.
Asked whether he wished to make a statement, Lil Wayne (whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter) shook his head and declined. After sentencing he was cuffed and bowed toward fans present in the courtroom.
The conviction stems from a 2007 arrest in New York.
In November, Lil Wayne made a deal with prosecutors to plead out to a lesser sentence.
He will begin his stint today and could be released as early as October for good behavior.
