Liam Payne Did NOT Spend $1.5 Million On ‘Taste Of Diamond’ Champagne, Despite Report
Liam Payne did not spend $1.5 million on champagne, despite an old and inaccurate report that was regurgitated in one of this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop can correct this claim. We’re told it’s “not true.”
According to the not entirely reliable Star, Payne “spent over $1.5 million on Taste of Diamond champagne for a buddy’s 24th birthday, despite being only 19 at the time.” The snarky tabloid adds, “At that rate, the One Direction Payne is heading toward bankruptcy.” And while Payne, who turns 23 in a week and a half, has not had financial problems, Star’s parent company, American Media, Inc., actually filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010.
Anyway, the tabloid based its old story on photos of Payne celebrating his friend’s Wizkid’s 24th birthday in July 2013 at the London club Funky Buddha, where he poured a glass of Taste of Diamond champagne. And while it’s true luxury designer Alexander Amosu created a $1.5 million bottle of Taste of Diamond with 18-carat gold and an actual diamond embedded into it, that’s not what Payne treated Wizkid to on his birthday. In fact, the famous picture of Payne pouring the bubbly was taken by Amosu, who noted the bottle the One Direction singer had was the Swarovski crystal version, which costs about $450.
Basically, the tabloid’s tale about Payne was off by just $1,499,550. Still, Gossip Cop checked into the story with a source close to Payne, and we’re assured the publication’s article about the singer’s alleged extravagant spending is “not true.”
