Leonardo DiCaprio NOT Going To Mars, Despite Report
Leonardo DiCaprio is NOT going to Mars, despite an outlet inaccurately reporting a joke by the actor as a news story. Gossip Cop can exclusively debunk this claim. We’re told it’s not true.
On Monday, DiCaprio participated in a climate change panel at the White House’s South by South Lawn festival, along with President Obama and climate scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe. During the event, Hayhoe brought up Elon Musk’s proposed SpaceX program, which will offer people the opportunity to embark on a one-way trip to Mars to colonize the planet. The scientist insisted we should instead focus on Earth preservation, then quipped, “As long as we haven’t signed up for the trip to Mars, I don’t want to know if anyone has, I think you’re crazy.”
“I did,” DiCaprio joked in response, to which President Obama added, “I think he’ll acknowledge he’s crazy.” This entire exchange was a moment of levity during an otherwise serious discussion, but the New York Daily News reported it as real and as news. “Leonardo DiCaprio announced that he’s signed up to go to Mars,” the newspaper writes in its piece, which fails to mention that the three panelists were laughing during their back-and-forth. The outlet even goes on to describe DiCaprio’s Mars (joking) remark as a “revelation.”
Gossip Cop, however, checked in with a source close to DiCaprio for complete clarification, and we’re exclusively assured the Oscar-winner is “not going to Mars.” We’re told his comment “was a joke.”
