Lena Dunham drew an unexpected comparison between Amanda Bynes and Dunham’s “Girls” character Hannah Horvath while speaking at the New Yorker Festival on Friday.

In the hours before Dunham’s appearance, Bynes had falsely accused her father of sexual abuse before retracting the allegations and claiming a “microchip” in her brain was controlling her.

While Dunham is saddened by Bynes’ obvious mental health problems (Bynes was subsequently hospitalized on a psychiatric hold), some of what she saw on Twitter struck a chord.

Dunham is quoted by Vulture as telling the audience:

I don’t know if I’m the only one who’s been closely following Amanda Bynes’s tweets today. She’s clearly off her medication, the whole situation is really bad… But she did say something kind of similar [to Hannah] which was, ‘I’m not crazy, I’m actually the one who knows everything that’s happening.’

I texted [“Girls” producer Jenni Konner] and said, ‘Maybe I’m nuts, but I think Amanda Bynes is actually kind of a great writer. Do you know what I mean?’ She was like, ‘I don’t know what you mean!’
