Miss Angola Leila Lopes Wins Miss Universe 2011

Truth rating: 10

(NBC)

Leila Lopes of Angola was crowned Miss Universe on Monday night.

The 25-year-old Lopes is the first Miss Universe from Angola. She beat out contestants from 88 other countries to win the title on the pageant’s 60th anniversary.

And it was a question about beauty that helped her take the crown.

When asked what physical trait she would change, Lopes replied, “Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me, and I wouldn’t change a thing.” She added, “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family, and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”

The first runner-up after Lopes was 23-year-old Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine, followed by Priscila Machado of Brazil, where the competition was held.

Lopes replaces last year’s Miss Universe, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.

Miss Universe is co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC.

Inner beauty does determine a lot about a person. It will shine on the outside with confidence and radiance. Leila’s family really instilled great principles in her. Why mention the vice president? Who is the president?

she didn’t answer the question actually..

For several years the Q&A was the “make or break” of the candidates to the Miss Universe. If that, together with the other main event rankings were to be the basis, Miss Philippines should have won or atleast landed 1st runner up. Angola was not even good on the ramp and was “belled” during the Q&A. I think that the Miss Universe is really a rip off with some political forces or Donald Trump agendas and interests playing behind the scenes. For example, Miss Venezuela and Miss USA deserved to be among the top contenders. Also, they removed the transparency of showing the scores given by each judge. The judges also claimed that they were not the ones who wrote the questions; they were handed over by the organizers. They also removed the “one question for all the top 5 finalists” where the other contestants were placed in a sound proof booth while waiting for their turn to answer the same q. So I think the whole thing is a set up. The organizer’s mistake was they showed the internet voting rankings which showed that Miss Philippines was the choice of people around the world while Miss Angola was the Miss Universe for a panel of 5 or more judges. Without the benefit of transparency, I even doubt it if the judges themselves are sure that the scores they gave were really reflected in the final tally. Placing Miss Philippines in the 3rd runner up now appears as a safety net to any further controversy that would arise if the organizers would opt for a portuguese-speaking candidate. But I commend Miss Philippines for the genuine humility by asking her countrymen not to fuel the controversy and instead accept the decision of the panel and/or the organizers with utmost humility.

Miss angola doesn’t even know how to carry her gown. She was holding her trail while going down the stairs. She didn’t answer the question fully and the answer has no sense.

  • Frank A Hilario

Miss Angola deserved to be only 4th runner-up – her answer to the final question was entirely wrong. Read my essay, “Oprah or no Oprah, Shamcey Supsup should be Miss Universe 2011,” (Creattitudes, blogspot.com).

The whole thing seems rigged and there is no transparency in the judging. How were Australia, Colombia and Venezuela eliminated? Venezuela had a score (9.1) in the swimsuit competition which was much higher than whoever was ranked second (7.0) and she did not make it to the next round. Apparently, there are internal forces that are manipulating the results and did not want her to move to the next round. Of the last 5, maybe the Phillipines was a genuine candidate.
