Lauryn Hill Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion, Faces Up to 3 Years in Prison

Lauryn Hill pleaded guilty on Friday to three counts of tax evasion.

As Gossip Cop previously reported, the singer was charged earlier this month with failure to file federal tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service on more than $1.6 million in earnings during 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Hill appeared in a New Jersey court room on Friday, where her attorney said she plans to pay what she owes.

Still, the Grammy winner faces up to one year in prison on each count.

At the hearing, Hill was asked if anyone influenced her plea, to which she reportedly replied, “Indirectly, I’ve been advised my ability to speak out directly is for another time, at sentencing.”

She will be sentenced in November, according to the Associated Press.

After news of Hill’s tax evasion broke, she wrote a lengthy blog post explaining she didn’t file her returns because she chose to live “underground” for the “safety” of her family.

“Obviously, the danger I faced was not accepted as reasonable grounds for deferring my tax payments, as authorities, who despite being told all of this, still chose to pursue action against me, as opposed to finding an alternative solution,” she wrote.

Hill noted that she faithfully paid her taxes while she was “working consistently,” and “only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.”

She concluded, “As this, and other areas of issue are resolved and set straight, I am able to get back to doing what I should be doing, the way it should be done.”

What do you think of Hill’s explanation, and do you think she should be imprisoned?

Her explanations are very vague. Still, I wish her the best of luck.

    Don’t these people have accountants?

I think that’s the problem, they employ people that have no idea how to handle as much money as these celebs make.

But in her case, I honestly think that she just decided she didn’t need to pay taxes.

Is this woman delusional? Let me get this in order: She decided NOT to pay taxes so that she and her family could live safely “underground” and away from that massive fame she has accomplished because SHE chose to get on stage and sing and record albums? Just like all the other singers in the world who have families AND pay taxes? Like them? Woman has lost her mind or her EGO is so big, she can’t see around it. From things I have heard, I will go with the latter. I don’t care if she never records again, personally.

“If the Supreme Court five make the ACA go away, nothing changes for these wildfire fighters in the immediate term, but they’ll be denied those near-future benefits and the hope that they could continue to do this critical job and protect themselves a little bit. Their hopes go up in smoke, and Republicans will cheer!

While Colorado goes up in flames, and the Republican wing of the Supreme Court writes the dismantling of Obamacare, the men and women hired by the federal government to fight wildfire are risking life and limb. Many of them are doing it without health insurance.

Of all the jobs where you might want health insurance, firefighting near certainly ranks near the top of the list. Firefighters spend two-week shifts working 18 hour days in dangerous conditions. Some develop breathing problems due to smoke inhalation.

This is the status quo Republicans have been fighting for for the past two years. If the Affordable Care Act survives the Supreme Court Republican five, it could help. Many of the firefighters make little enough to qualify for the subsidies to purchase insurance, making the premiums in reach. They’d also be guaranteed access to affordable health insurance, something that can be a problem for people in high-risk jobs” ~~DAILY KOS
