Late Night Hosts Joke About Ryan Lochte’s Rio Robbery Lie (VIDEO)
As Gossip Cop reported, Lochte was involved in a robbery scandal during the Rio Olympics after the swimmer was caught lying about being held up at gunpoint by men posing as police officers. In reality, Lochte and three other Olympic swimmers had vandalized a gas station bathroom and were apprehended by armed security guards, who demanded they pay for the damages.
Discussing the controversy on his talk show, Kimmel joked, “The next Olympics will be held in Tokyo, and that worries me because I hope Ryan Lochte doesn’t get attacked by Godzilla while he’s there.” The host went on to explain how Lochte was dropped by sponsors including Speedo and Ralph Lauren, but noted that his lost endorsements “weren’t [all] that major,” and also included “a mattress company and something called Gentle Hair Removal.”
Kimmel further quipped, “The U.S. Olympic committee said he let America down… Acting like a drunken jackass in a foreign country, what’s more American than that?” However, the late night host did go on to (sort of) defend the disgraced Olympian, saying, “He has spent a full, probably, third of his life underwater. Which means his brain does not get enough oxygen to properly function.” Kimmel continued, “He is not able to make the kind of basic decisions most humans are able to make, like how many quarters are in a dollar and which shoe goes on which foot.”
“He’s not that much smarter than a tuna fish,” the host added. “So yes, if you judge Ryan Lochte as a person, what he did was unacceptable. But if you judge him as a fish, it’s actually pretty impressive. A fish who is smart enough to lie? You could build a whole aquarium around that.”
Meanwhile, Colbert parodied Lochte’s “Today” show interview with Matt Lauer by superimposing himself into the actual footage. Using a snippet of the swimmer saying he’s trying to “lay low” in the wake of the scandal, Colbert said, “Television is the best place to do that.” And when Lochte admitted to Lauer he “over-exaggerated” the “part” of the story about being robbed at gunpoint, Colbert responded, “That part is really the whole part. Without a gun cocked at your forehead, it’s really just a story about some guys urinating on a gas station.”
Colbert then went on to mock Lochte’s repeated excuses about being “intoxicated,” both during the incident and in an interview with Billy Bush the next morning. “Describe for the audience the Ryan Lochte we can expect to see at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020,” the host asked, before cutting to footage of the Olympian stating, “intoxicated.” Watch the video below!
