‘Last Exorcism’ scares off others for box office top spot

The Last Exorcism has slightly edged out heist flick Takers for the weekend box office’s top spot.

Backed by horror king Eli Roth, but featuring mostly unknowns, The Last Exorcism brought in $21.3 million in its first weekend. Takers, with an ensemble cast that includes Matt Dillon and Hayden Christensen, banked a close $21 million

The two new films pushed The Expendables — which won in its first two weeks of release — down to a distant third place with $9.5 million.

Among other holdovers, Julia Roberts‘ wish fulfillment journey Eat Pray Love took fourth place with $6.8 million, while Will Ferrell‘s comedy The Other Guys came in fifth with $6.2 million.
