Lance Armstrong No Longer Fighting Doping Claims, Will Lose Champion Titles

Truth rating: 10

Lance Armstrong announced on Thursday night that he will no longer fight the doping allegations that have been leveled against him in recent years.

In a lengthy statement on his official website, the champion cyclist wrote, “There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ For me, that time is now.”

“I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999… The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong went on to explain his decision, saying, “If I thought for one moment that by participating in USADA’s process, I could confront these allegations in a fair setting and – once and for all – put these charges to rest, I would jump at the chance. But I refuse to participate in a process that is so one-sided and unfair.”

Instead, the athlete said he will “devote myself to raising my five beautiful (and energetic) kids, fighting cancer, and attempting to be the fittest 40-year old on the planet.”

After the announcement, U.S. Anti-Doping Agency chief executive Travis Tygart told the Associated Press that the agency will ban Armstrong from cycling for life, and strip him of his seven Tour de France titles.

Last year, Armstrong officially announced his retirement from cycling.

LANCE ARMSTRONG FULL STATEMENT

AUSTIN, Texas – August 23rd, 2012 – There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say, “Enough is enough.” For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a two-year federal criminal investigation followed by Travis Tygart’s unconstitutional witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense.

I had hoped that a federal court would stop USADA’s charade. Although the court was sympathetic to my concerns and recognized the many improprieties and deficiencies in USADA’s motives, its conduct, and its process, the court ultimately decided that it could not intervene.

If I thought for one moment that by participating in USADA’s process, I could confront these allegations in a fair setting and – once and for all – put these charges to rest, I would jump at the chance. But I refuse to participate in a process that is so one-sided and unfair. Regardless of what Travis Tygart says, there is zero physical evidence to support his outlandish and heinous claims. The only physical evidence here is the hundreds of controls I have passed with flying colors. I made myself available around the clock and around the world. In-competition. Out of competition. Blood. Urine. Whatever they asked for I provided. What is the point of all this testing if, in the end, USADA will not stand by it?

From the beginning, however, this investigation has not been about learning the truth or cleaning up cycling, but about punishing me at all costs. I am a retired cyclist, yet USADA has lodged charges over 17 years old despite its own 8-year limitation. As respected organizations such as UCI and USA Cycling have made clear, USADA lacks jurisdiction even to bring these charges. The international bodies governing cycling have ordered USADA to stop, have given notice that no one should participate in USADA’s improper proceedings, and have made it clear the pronouncements by USADA that it has banned people for life or stripped them of their accomplishments are made without authority. And as many others, including USADA’s own arbitrators, have found, there is nothing even remotely fair about its process. USADA has broken the law, turned its back on its own rules, and stiff-armed those who have tried to persuade USADA to honor its obligations. At every turn, USADA has played the role of a bully, threatening everyone in its way and challenging the good faith of anyone who questions its motives or its methods, all at U.S. taxpayers’ expense. For the last two months, USADA has endlessly repeated the mantra that there should be a single set of rules, applicable to all, but they have arrogantly refused to practice what they preach. On top of all that, USADA has allegedly made deals with other riders that circumvent their own rules as long as they said I cheated. Many of those riders continue to race today.

The bottom line is I played by the rules that were put in place by the UCI, WADA and USADA when I raced. The idea that athletes can be convicted today without positive A and B samples, under the same rules and procedures that apply to athletes with positive tests, perverts the system and creates a process where any begrudged ex-teammate can open a USADA case out of spite or for personal gain or a cheating cyclist can cut a sweetheart deal for themselves. It’s an unfair approach, applied selectively, in opposition to all the rules. It’s just not right.

USADA cannot assert control of a professional international sport and attempt to strip my seven Tour de France titles. I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours. We all raced together. For three weeks over the same roads, the same mountains, and against all the weather and elements that we had to confront. There were no shortcuts, there was no special treatment. The same courses, the same rules. The toughest event in the world where the strongest man wins. Nobody can ever change that. Especially not Travis Tygart.

Today I turn the page. I will no longer address this issue, regardless of the circumstances. I will commit myself to the work I began before ever winning a single Tour de France title: serving people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities. This October, my Foundation will celebrate 15 years of service to cancer survivors and the milestone of raising nearly $500 million. We have a lot of work to do and I’m looking forward to an end to this pointless distraction. I have a responsibility to all those who have stepped forward to devote their time and energy to the cancer cause. I will not stop fighting for that mission. Going forward, I am going to devote myself to raising my five beautiful (and energetic) kids, fighting cancer, and attempting to be the fittest 40-year old on the planet.

Travis Tygart: the most hated man in sports!

If Travis Tygart would have proven doping each year lance won the tour and then stripped the title it would be ok, but do not do this so long after the fact , when you have no strong proof. The runners up of the tour will also not accept there new found first place, since they did not get it rightfully.

    This is sad,:(

He has every right to throw up his hands in discust….. It has gone on long enough…. it doesn’t seem anyone wants it to stop after all these years…. and all the cost…. he can pick it just at soon as you pay for the court costs…. and take the heat his children have to take…. maybe you should replace the monies he gives to chairity….. It’s his life…. and he says he is tired… I am only sorry he couldn’t have achieved his goal…..

lance is still winner. with titles or not.

clearly he cheated otherwise he wouldn’t give up his case just before the decision. Those are the actions of a guilty man.

  • Karen

Basically Travis Tygart is conducting this witch hunt to make a name for his slimey greaseball lawyer self. F&ck Tygart, karma will catch up with that twat.

  • Karen

Is this Travis posting under a fake name? If not, you are really a moron Sam. Lance would have no chance fighting, once a USADA “decision” has been made, the record is 58 and TWO in arbitration. It is a kangaroo court… Oh, but you knew that right?

Lawyers have no shame, scum of the Earth

Well said what they have done to him is wrong.

Why is it that someone who excels at a sport has to be hounded for years as being a doper? Is it inconceivable that someone could just be that good??? And if I read one more “sports writer” who has written an article saying that Lance Armstrong is a doper because he’s allowing his titles to be stripped from him I’ll scream. If he is doping, or ever had been, he’s extremely good at it because I haven’t read anything that confirms beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s ever been found guilty of doing it. This, much like the BS of going after ball players for steroid use (I don’t care!!!! and it’s a tremendous waste of money) is the very worst this country has to offer. Hounding someone relentlessly until they finally give up and throw in the towel is not an admission of guilt, regardless of what anyone thinks. It’s shameful.

  • guest

He “gave up” because he was tired of fighting this not because he’s guilty.

  • catca

The article is incorrect on one point, the USDA has no authority to strip Lance Armstrong of his Tour De France titles. They are recommending he be stripped and the decision is up to the International Cycling Association. Granted, they will likely accept the recommendation and strip Lance, but that is not a done deal yet.

  • catca

Sure, the mountain of evidence including eye witnesses who saw him doping (we’re talking dozens of men ready to testify to this), problems at the testing labs, and someone who was able to win the title seven times in a row competing against a bunch of other cyclists who have admitted to doping. And now he’s giving up the fight when he’s a guy who’s never given up a fight in his life. That’s how he beat cancer to begin with. Lance is not a quitter. If Lance stayed retired, he wouldn’t have opened up the inquiries.

The bottom line is the doping doesn’t change the fact that Lance not only beat cancer against all the odds and is still one of the fittest men in the world. That’s impressive whether he doped or not. It also doesn’t change that he inspired many people and did make the world a better place through his fighting spirit. But seriously J F, there are many reasons to continue to admire Lance, but to believe he’d quit if he never doped given his track record as well as the mountain of evidence is kind of a stretch.

I may not watch the sport but he will forever be known as one of the best…you can strip away titles but not the memories of those who witnessed his wins

OK, I admit that I have not read all of the articles written about this, so I may not know what all the drugs are that he used to “dope”, however I do think this…this is a shame, he should be able to keep his titles, I work with cancer patient’s and the fact is that when a person is in treatment, almost always there are other drugs that are needed to support chemotherapy, such as Aloxi, Procrit, Neupogen, Epogen, steroids, methotrexate and the list goes on and on…these are not enhancing drugs, they support the immune system that the chemotherapy is beating down, the fact that he had cancer and biked…is amazing, most of us would be so sick we couldn’t get out of bed, I say shame on the people that are doing this, and Lance…I doubt you ever see this, but you just keep on being what you are, a person that not only strives to live the best life, but also as a hero to those who don’t feel like they can go another day but do because you may have helped them with your strength and example, as well as being a face and a voice to help for cancer awareness, not just one cancer but all types of cancers.
