Lady Gaga “Til It Happens To You” Oscars Video: Watch Moving Academy Awards Performance And Joe Biden Speech
Lady Gaga gave a moving and powerful performance of “Til It Happens To You” at the 2016 Oscars on Sunday, after an introduction from Vice President Joe Biden. Watch below.
As Gossip Cop has reported, “Til It Happens To You” is a stirring song about the devastating consequences of sexual assault. The track was primarily written by Diane Warren, who brought Gaga on as a collaborator. She recorded it for The Hunting Ground, a documentary about rape on college campuses.
The song was officially released last October, along with an intense music video starring Nikki Reed. In January, “Til It Happens To You” received an Original Song nomination when the Academy Awards nominees were announced. As Gossip Cop reported, however, musician Linda Perry questioned Lady Gaga getting the nod along with Warren, wondering on Twitter how much the pop star actually contributed to the song’s creation.
Gaga hasn’t addressed the criticism, but did say in an interview last week that far more important to her than winning an Oscar is using the song to help rape survivors. She was invited to share that message on the Academy Awards stage, which would also host fellow Original Song nominees Sam Smith and The Weeknd. Gaga, however, was the only one to score Biden as her presenter, and he told the star-studded audience, “Despite significant progress over the last few years, too many woman and men on and off college campuses are still victims of sexual abuse.”
“Tonight, I’m asking you to join millions of Americans including me, President Obama, the thousands of students I’ve met on college campuses and the artists here tonight to take the pledge. The pledge says I will intervene in situations where consent has not or can not be given,” the Vice President continued. “Let’s change the culture, we must and we can change the culture.”
Towards the end of her performance, Gaga was joined on stage by survivors of sexual assault. The men and women had messages written on their arms, including “Not Your Fault.” At the end, they raised their arms together. A few in the audience appeared to be in tears, including Rachel McAdams.
The appearance is just the latest accomplishment for Gaga, who has had a particularly strong start to 2016. After winning her first Golden Globe, for “American Horror Story: Hotel,” in January, she received rave reviews for her National Anthem performance at the Super Bowl in early February. That was followed by an elaborate tribute to David Bowie at the Grammys, and on Saturday, Gaga joined Elton John for a free outdoor concert on the Sunset Strip.
This now marks the second year in a row Gaga has performed at the Academy Awards. As Gossip Cop reported, she took the stage last year for a performance in honor of The Sound Of Music. Check out video of Gaga’s 2016 Oscars performance below.
