Lady Gaga Gets Blasted by PETA Over Fur: “Are You A Turncoat?”

Truth rating: 10

(GettyImages.com)

Lady Gaga is the latest celebrity to draw outrage from PETA, with the animal rights advocacy group suggesting that she’s a “turncoat” for professing to be anti-fur but wearing it in recent public appearances.

In a letter to the pop star (SEE BELOW), PETA vice president Dan Mathews starts by saying he’d “long admired” Gaga for telling Ellen DeGeneres, “I hate fur, and I don’t wear fur.”

But Mathews then links to several pictures of Gaga “in fox and rabbit and with a wolf carcass,” leading him to wonder if she has “amnesia.”

“What happened?” asks Mathews. “Are your stylists telling you that it’s fake, or are you a turncoat?”

The PETA official identifies himself as gay, cites PETA’s participation in gay pride events, and declares, “Many gays are animal advocates because we recognize that the same arrogance and indifference that some have toward animal suffering has at times been directed toward us personally because of our orientation.”

Gaga, of course, is an outspoken proponent of gay rights.

Mathews warns Gaga, “By wearing those dumb furs in a heat wave, you’re making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian,” who was infamously flour bombed by a animal rights activist.

PETA asks Gaga to let them know “whether what you gracefully told Ellen was heartfelt or just a pose.”

There’s been no word yet from Gaga’s camp.

Dear Gaga,

Many of your gay fans, I among them, have long admired what you told Ellen: “I hate fur, and I don’t wear fur.” I included a link because these recent photos of you in fox and rabbit and with a wolf carcass make it appear that you have amnesia. I’m also including this brief video hosted by Tim Gunn showing the violent cruelty that you promote when you wear fur. What happened? Are your stylists telling you that it’s fake, or are you a turncoat? Many gays are animal advocates because we recognize that the same arrogance and indifference that some have toward animal suffering has at times been directed toward us personally because of our orientation. PETA has long participated in Pride events around the country, and just last week, we helped lead protests against Chick-fil-A. But by wearing those dumb furs in a heat wave, you’re making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian. As we plan our fall campaigns, please tell us whether what you gracefully told Ellen was heartfelt or just a pose.

We await your reply.

Sincerely,

Dan Mathews
Senior Vice President
PETA

I can’t stand PETA and hope GaGa doesn’t respond. Comparing gay rights to animal cruelty is another ridiculous statement from the people who put down 95% of the animals they take in.

    and wearing fur is better?

  • Mario_is_a_putts

If yur gonna killem. Might as well wearem.

Oh my goodness some people are so ignorant. Educate yourselves on fur farming. A lot of people complain about PETA without being properly educated on the amazing work that they do. Ignorance is not bliss.

  • Anonymous

I’m against killing animals solely for fur, but if they’re killed for meat or because there’s a surplus in a certain area, it’s better to use all of the animal.

Do you even know what goes on at fur farms? Have you seen what happens to animals in factory farms? I venture to guess you haven’t. Using animals as a commodity is inherently wrong. Try watching a few minutes of Earthlings and let me know that you see nothing wrong with this.

Also, being a lesbian, I would compare animals rights to gay rights. Making another group the “other” is wrong, whether it be homophobia or speciesism.

My stance is not with PETA, but rather for the animals that are mistreated every day and have no voice.

Why would PETA want to publish a letter to a publicist? So indiscrete and malicious. And they don’t even know yet if it’s fake or not. If I were Gaga, I would admonish these self-contradictory people with a statement.

Powder-bombing celebrities and jumping to conclusions while sending hate letters to the media rather than the artist representation isn’t exactly decent behavior.

“Try watching a few minutes of Earthlings”

I know… I can only watch a couple minutes before I get so hungry I can’t stand it no more and start grilling up a tasty steak.

Speciesism, as you call it and homophobia have nothing in common. Homophobia is having an extreme and irrational aversion to homosexuality and homosexual people. Speciesism, is the belief that a whole species is superior to another, giving them the right to do as they please with any lesser deemed species. So unless you are classing homosexual people as being a different species to heterosexual people, your argument that these two terms are related is not correct. I’d be very careful because if you want to go down that road of calling gay and straight people a different species you might get labeled a bigot.

I find your idea that sexuality and animal rights relate, laughable. There is always someone who wants to play the race card or the gender card, the sexuality card and now apparently the species card? It seems to me that if a person can’t come up with a better argument, these terms are always thrown around.

Please, face the fact that being gay doesn’t make you different from any other person. You are not a different species, you are a human.

Humans and animals are in fact a different species. It’s also a fact that animals eat other animals to maintain life. Do you want animals to become vegetarians as well? While there is life on earth the food chain will continue. People will continue to eat animals and wear their fur (something that has been happening since humans have roamed the earth), and larger animals will continue to prey on smaller animals, and eat them to maintain their life.

Your ignorance is readily apparent, regardless of the similarities and differences of homophobia and speciesism the fact of the matter is that the oppression of a sentient being is taking place in any form of discrimination.

While far back in history it was necessary to consume animals for sustenance it is absolutely not required in this day and age of agriculture. Surviving off of no animal products whatsoever is completely viable and therefore the most optimal, logical and moral way to live in this world.

The fact that the animal product industry is one the top contributors to world pollution and preventable diseases is alone enough to consider animal products a thing of the past, don’t forget that a sentient being (a conscious living organism) has to suffer so that someone can receive sustenance while numerous alternatives exist.

Arguing that carnivorous or omnivorous animals should become vegan or vegetarian if we do is irrelevant since animals don’t have the capability to sustain themselves with non animal product foods through widespread agriculture, obviously.

Sadly individuals like you are the reasons why major discrimination movements have to be overturned through revolutions in order to reach a higher state of justice and actual freedom for the parties being oppressed, at the end of the day animals are sentient beings and regardless of their intelligence they to deserve to live a life of peace and tranquility from the evils of homo sapiens.

Obviously Gaga was lying, just like she did when quizzed on national tv about the similarities of Born This Way to Madonna’s Express Yourself. She claimed to have received an email of support from Madonna’s camp , a statement immediately denied by Madonna’s rep. Strangely Gaga did not respond to that disclosure either! She jumps on bandwagons tgen when they’re no more use to her she jumps off again!!

The definition of Speciesism involves the assignment of different values, rights, or special consideration to individuals solely on the basis of their species membership. The term is mostly used by animal rights advocates, who argue that speciesism is a prejudice similar to racism or sexism, in that the treatment of individuals is predicated on group membership and morally irrelevant physical differences.

Now, trying to label me as a bigot is quite a stretch when the majority was able to vote on the rights of the minority as it pertains to same sex marriage.

Yes, the group I am is a minority and is treated as such by not having all the rights that heterosexual couples have. How is that no different from the way that we treat animals? Do we treat them as the other? Yes. Do we discriminate against them? Yes. Does everyone discriminate against them? No. How can you possibly call me a bigot. Educate yourself before making claims that are completely untrue. What you call “race card, sex card, etc.” is insulting and one would be careful how you word what you say or you could be labeled as a bigot.

No, I do not want animals (carnivores) to be vegetarians, because the way that their bodies are made up are made to eat meat. You just showed how ignorant you are with that statement, again, educate yourself.

If you look at true meat eaters, like lions and tigers, they kill their prey and tear directly into the stomach where the blood filled organs are. They need the nutrients from the stomach, liver, and intestines. When we cook raw meat, we are cooking out a lot of the necessary nutrients that true meat eaters need to survive, so if we were meant to eat meat, we would eat it raw and bloody.

Even carnivores who run across prey that has been burned in a fire don’t eat their meat cooked.

Men who eat red meat 4 to 5 times a week will have 4 times the risk of developing colon cancer than men who only eat meat as a main meal once a month, or less. It’s thought that when red meat is cooked, carcinogens are created which may cause the increased risk of colon cancer.

But, even chicken, lamb, pork, turkey, quail, fish, eggs, sausages, mince, and beef are all highly acidic when digested. Diets that are rich in acidic forming foods has been proven to increase risks of illnesses and disease because the high acidity causes an accumulation of debris and mucous in the colon, which reduced the immune system’s ability to eliminate toxins from the body.

Also, meat eaters have an intestinal tract that is only 3 times their body length so that rapidly decaying meat can pass through faster. Herbivores and humans have an instestinal tract that is 10 to 12 times their body length. We also prespire through skin pores, have no claws, bowels that are bumpy and pouch-like with lots of pockets so that plant matter can pass through slowly for optimal nutrient absorption, stomach acid that is 20 times weaker than that of a meat eater, well-developed salivary glands that are needed to pre-digest grains and fruits, flat front teeth not built for pulling meat off the bone; and have flat molars for chewing; canine teeth fairly align with the rest of the teeth so not designed for attacking prey; teeth are fitted closely together, and jaws that can move backward and foward, up and down, and side to side, which is ideal to grind grains; jaw is set close to the face.

All of these attributes are the exact opposite of a meat eater, so please tell me, how in the hell are we meat eaters? Try reading on the subject before you start making claims that you can’t backup.

As far as wearing fur, we aren’t living in the stone age anymore, there is no need to wear fur so that argument has no validity.

Fur farms are outrageously cruel and wasteful – hundreds of healthy adorable animals are bred and skinned for a vanity coat – one! this can never be made right no matter how much you want to deny it

    1. there are clear links between animal cruelty and other forms of oppression – sorry you cannot see them but they are there when you are ready to think
    2. i dont agree with peta putting down pets but pet over population is a complex and difficult problem that gets little support from the authorities who should be dealing with it , let alone the people who contribute to it..
    3. if you dont support peta putting animals down humanely, i dont see how you can possibly support the fur industry, which breeds and kills thousands of animals a day if not more… ever considered how many chinchilas are killed for one ugly coat?

in fact, the process of classifying human or animals as other underlies all forms of oppression and justifies all kinds of cruelty – during war time the enemy is perceived as less than human, the nazis turned the jews into animals – there was as time when whites believed africans were not human and bred them the same way as we do animals.. there are clear links between the way humans classify life and the way we treat them- your only justification for farming and killing other animals is because you see them as “other” just the same as homophobics see homosexuals as “other”

the better question is why would gaga want to wear fur in this day and age? we all know now that fur farms are outrageously cruel and unncessary

The only material that comes from animals used for their meat is their skins to make leather. Fur never (ever) comes from animals used for their meat. That’s why some people who wear leather and eat meat never wear fur. It’s 100% wasteful.
