Lady Gaga Officially Cancels Indonesia Concert After Threats

Lady Gaga has officially canceled her concert slated for Indonesia on June 3.

Two weeks ago, it was first noted that the singer was being forced to cancel her show in the capitol city of Jakarta amid fierce opposition from Muslim groups and political leaders who claimed she would corrupt young concert goers.

Religious hard-liners in the country contended that Gaga’s provocative dances and outfits were too “dangerous” an influence to allow, and the national police subsequently denied a permit for the concert.

There were then talks about ways for Gaga to tone down the performance.

But on Sunday, the concert was officially called off, leaving fans upset, despite the show’s promoter offering full refunds.

Gaga herself tweeted, “We had to cancel the concert in Indonesia. I’m so very sorry to the fans & just as devastated as you if not more. You are everything to me.”

Organizers said they weren’t just concerned about the singer’s safety, but also of those attending the concert.

Members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) called the show’s cancellation a “victory,” and noted they had purchased tickets to the “Born This Way Ball” in an effort to disrupt the show.

Gaga vowed on Twitter: “I will try to put together something special for you. My love for Indonesia has only grown. #GagaSendsLoveToJakarta and all its people.”

It’s not the first time the singer has met with resistance from government officials on the Asian leg of her tour.

Gaga’s opening “Born This Way Ball” show, on April 27 in South Korea, was restricted to fans over 18 years old.

Smart on her part, but it’s unfortunate for her fans that she had too. But safety is more important. What would worse? Her cancelling the show? Or her and/or someone else getting hurt or worse?

  • Peaceoutalyssa

Poor Gaga she works really hard to put togther a show and now she has to cancel it!! There is nothing holy about hatred!! If Indonesia didnt want her there then why did they let her enter their country!? its not gagas fault!

If performers do not respect the culture of other countries, they should not book show dates there. What did her team think, that the leaders would change their mind because it was her?? Obviously they care about the morality of their young people, something the US stopped doing a long time ago. It does state in the story that they were concerned for her safety and the safety of people who would attend the concert. All ticket purchases were refunded. This was not a sudden thing, she knew from the beginning that they did not want her there.

Oh please stop with the “morality” preaching. There’s nothing moral about threatening violence against people like this group did. That’s anti-morals and the anti-thesis of what religion is supposed to be about. What immoral things does she preach? I didn’t know tolerance and acceptance were immoral.

Please get off your high horse, these people threatened her and her crew. NOTHING MORAL ABOUT THAT. Nothing could ever justify that.

Were you there???By tolerance and acceptance do you mean that those people should ignore their own values or at least relax them to accomadate her kind of show even though they don’t want their kids exposed to it? How do you know that they threatened her? They behaved the way they did to keep them safe.
If she wants to perform her concert in her own very unique way, more power to her.
But there are countries where people are not comfortable with that, and that does not make them bad people, they just want higher morals for their families. That is their right.

Where you there? How cliche’d. I’d call someone saying they’ll do what it takes to stop the concert as a threat. Especially when you have someone with a ticket wearing a bandanna over their face, that doesn’t tend to lean towards peaceful protest. 150 tickets they bought.

As for morals and “high morals” the moral high ground is a hill built on hypocrisy.

Hope this doesn’t happen when she comes down under..not likely though…can not wait to see her live!!

Maybe you know nothing about islam, and even if you do, it would seems very strange to you. But for muslim people it’s normal, it’s the way all their lifes go. I woudn’t be surprised if members of PFI have never seen Gaga, and they couldn’t stop the sale of tickets on time. Anyway, any attempt to arrange a concert, which involved half-naked woman, in a muslim country is useless.

  • Me

I’m no expert on Islam I’ll admit that. They didn’t buy the tickets to try and stop it that way they were going to the concert to stop it and even if they don’t know what she looks like(which would be a bit of stretch) they can figure out the female on stage singing is her. I’m not talking about oppostion from government or Conservative religious groups that’s something tottally different. I can sort of understand why people wouldn’t want their children exposed to some of the outfits her and other popstars wear.

But when I see people wearing bandannas covering their faces and promising that nothing will happen to the crowd just Gaga and her crew, that leaves me with the impression they’re no going there for and light candles and pray.

It’s possible, but this can happen not only with Gaga, but with every woman there, neither she’s a muslimah or not. When women come there, for vacation, for example, they can walk in bikini only on the hotels’ territory, but when they go out, they wear hijab or nikab – they buy these clothes aforehand. People, who come there, have to comply local customs.
