Lady Gaga’s best friend Sonja Durham has died. The pop star’s longtime pal and collaborator passed away after battling stage IV brain cancer.

For a number of years, Durham worked as Gaga’s assistant and executive director. She’s played a key role in the superstar’s life, personally and professionally, and their friendship inspired Gaga’s song “Grigio Girls.” The track is a bonus featured on the deluxe edition of Joanne, which came out last October.

Despite her serious illness, Durham was able to be by Gaga’s side at the Super Bowl in February. The singer later helped organize Durham’s wedding to Andre DuBois, another friend and colleague. In April, Gaga sang an acoustic version of “Edge Of Glory” in tribute to her beloved friend at Coachella. She told the crowd, “My friend Sonja is very sick and I love her so much, and if it’s okay with you, I’d like to sing this song for her.”

On her blog, Durham, who also previously suffered from breast cancer, credited Gaga as a “guardian angel,” and revealed the performer was helping her financially through the medical crisis. On Thursday, however, Gaga indicated Durham’s condition had taken a turn for the worse. Along with the above photo, she wrote on Instagram, “Watching one of my best friends in the world show unfathomable courage, strength, and positivity while battling cancer has really changed my life. Thank you Sonja for inspiring me and all of us everyday with your joy.”

“I love you so much it brings tears to my eyes just to think of all the years we’ve spent together backstage running the show, taking care of each other. You are one of a kind. I’m so proud of you,” Gaga went on. “And you and Andre, your unbreakable beautiful love is what life is all about. You can see it in this photo. Wanted to share this with the world and show them what true beauty looks like.”

She added, “#grigiogirls #sonjadurham @sonjad7777 I love you girl. I love you so much.” Now Gaga’s Little Monsters have made “#RIPSonja” a trending topic on Twitter in her memory. Gaga can be seen talking about Dunham last fall in the video below.
