“American Idol” Runner-Up La’Porsha Renae: ‘I Don’t Agree’ With LGBT ‘Lifestyle’
“American Idol” runner-up La’Porsha Renae is raising eyebrows with comments she made about the LGBT community just hours after the FOX music competition’s series finale.
As Gossip Cop has reported, Renae was widely considered the frontrunner throughout season 15. On Thursday night, however, she lost to Trent Harmon, leaving even the judges stunned. Second-place came with a consolation prize, though, as it was revealed afterward that she, too, would be rewarded with a Big Machine record deal.
On Friday, Renae spoke with reporters about her next steps, from recording her debut album to whether she plans to move to Los Angeles. The singer said she wasn’t sure where she was going to live, but she would definitely be leaving her hometown in Mississippi. That prompted one of the conference call participants to ask Renae if she’s been following the controversy regarding the state’s new anti-LGBT law, which essentially allows for gay and transgender people to be discriminated against as long as the would-be offender has a “sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction.”
Renae said she hadn’t “heard about it,” noting, “The only thing that I’ve been aware of is that there was also controversy about the Confederate flag.” In response, she was then asked if that is influencing her decision to move out of Mississippi. The aspiring star said she was actually intending to leave due to the abusive relationship she endured with the father of her young child, something she spoke about at length on “Idol.”
But after saying she simply wanted to “start” over” with her daughter, Renae added, “This is how I feel about the LGBT community: They are people just like us. They’re not animals as someone [Manny Pacquiao] stated before. They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect. Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another.”
Renae went on, however, “I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.” Still, she added, “But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people. We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.”
Though Renae expressed tolerance for the LGBT community, her comment about not agreeing with “that lifestyle” isn’t sitting well with some. @JCTweet2 tweeted, “‘Idol’ runner-up La’Porsha Renae says that she doesn’t agree with LGBT ‘lifestyle.’ Glad I didn’t buy any of her music.”
@AlexMcNasty wrote, “I mean… in no way would I ever tell someone what to believe but it’s understandable why La’Porsha is gonna lose her many of her LGBT fans.” And @Sunshineliron said, “Well, what a disappointment she is. Good luck in show-business with this attitude, La’Porsha!”
Seemingly in response to the comments, Renae wrote on Twitter Friday night, “We don’t have to agree with each other’s life choices to love/respect one another. Live and let live. #RENAETION #RespectThatWeAreDifferent.” But that didn’t do much to appease offended fans.
@melonmoon904 replied, “@laporsharenae But the point is, it isn’t a choice. It is so hurtful to say that it is.” @eric_ascher similarly wrote back, “@laporsharenae the issue is being gay is not a choice. I wouldn’t choose to be gay if it were up to me. I’m disappointed with you right now.” And a Twitter user with the handle @F*ckinQueer asked, “@laporsharenae how do you not ‘agree’ with who someone loves? What does that even mean?”
That said, the vast majority of responses expressed support for Renae and her blossoming career, and some specifically defended her remarks. No one from “Idol” or Big Machine has commented on the dust-up as of yet.
